Today, my mom and dad are selling my home so my mom can move in with her new husband and my dad can move in with his new wife as I leave everything I've ever known behind. MMT

Today, after I inadvertently overheard them making fun of me, I actually began to smile. Not because they were making fun of me, but because I also overhead one of the kids in the group – the only one I have ever considered a friend – sticking up for me. It’s nice to know he truly is a friend even when I’m not around. MMT

Today, my 17-year-old daughter, Megan, didn’t put on any make-up. When I asked her why she said Katie, her 11-year-old little sister, started putting on makeup this morning too so she could be “beautiful.” Megan said she doesn’t ever want Katie to think she has to wear make-up to be beautiful. MMT

Today, at the final home game of the season, the entire boys basketball team at our high school entered the gymnasium in pairs of two holding hands. They did so in protest of the fact that two gay students had been sent to detention for a week for simply holding hands in the school’s hallways. MMT

Today, after severely injuring my back, losing my job because of it, being evicted from our apartment, moving in with my wife’s parents, nursing my 6 year old through a nearly fatal case of strep throat, I was sitting on the front porch feeling sorry for myself when one of my close friends called me crying and said, “Mel-Mel-Mellissa, my baby girl, just died in a car wreck.” And suddenly I felt like the lucky one. Today, I miss who I was. I miss the girl who had something to be proud of. I miss the girl who was genuinely happy in her own skin. I miss the girl who was innocent and free and thought for herself. I miss the girl who would look in the mirror and not see every flaw. I miss the girl who didn't let the negative words of others bother her. I’ve transformed myself to make everyone else like me. But now I don’t like me. I miss who I was. MMT

Today, I forgot to put on makeup, and for the first time in many years (I’m 56), a colleague of mine told me I look beautiful. MMT

Today, I read several stories on MMT about people coming together and celebrating a person’s life after they committed suicide. And it makes me think society needs a wake-up call. Because if we all celebrated each other’s lives more often - while we’re all alive - there would be far fewer suicides. MMT

Today, after one of my 11th grade students told me she hated high school, I asked her, “Why?” She said, “In this school, the popular kids are the rudest, the nicest kids are the loneliest, and the girls everyone thinks are pretty spend more time putting on makeup every morning than they do studying. And although I force myself to smile when I’m here, I sometimes cry in the mornings because I dread coming here.” MMT

Today, when I told my grandma that I was worried about taking a chance and regretting my choice, she said, “Do you know what my biggest regret is? Not taking more chances on opportunities when I was your age.” MMT

Today, as Jason (our star quarterback aka Mr. Popular) and Carly (a sweet plain Jane type) walked by holding hands I overheard a girl in my class ask a friend, “What do you think Jason sees in her? I mean, she is nothing special to look at. He can have any girl he wants.” Her friend replied, “Well, my mom says good looks attracts the eyes, but personality attracts the heart.” MMT

Today, out the front window of my house I saw a mail man across the street juggling several large boxes in his hands. As he approached an apartment complex an elderly woman was carrying her groceries up the front stairs of the building. The mail man put down all of his boxes and assisted the woman with getting her groceries up the stairs. MMT

Today, after spending almost an entire year in a wheel chair with a severe back injury after I was hit by a car while riding my bicycle last spring, I took my first steps without assistance. The doctors say with regular physical therapy I should be back on my feet fulltime within the next few months. MMT

Today, my husband and I live in Buffalo, New York. We are both in our 80’s and just had a heavy snow storm here. This morning as we were trying our best to shovel our driveway, two teenagers who we have never met before saw us struggling as they were driving by in their car. They pulled over and assisted us for nearly 30 minutes with shoveling the rest of the snow. Then they refused a tip and drove off. MMT

Today, at the Burger King where I work there was a group of 10 teenagers sitting outside harassing a homeless man who was trying to sleep on a bus stop bench. After several minutes of wise cracks, all of the kids left except for one. He came into our restaurant and ordered a value meal to go. He walked back outside, handed it to the homeless man and jogged off in the direction his friends headed. MMT

Today, I’ve put most of the weight back on. But I’m okay with it. I’m comfortable for the first time in my own skin. A couple years ago when I was bulimic and thin, I received lots of compliments from complete strangers about how great I looked. I don’t receive those random compliments anymore. But it doesn't bother me that they don’t say it anymore, it bothers me that they thought my illness was so attractive. MMT

Today, when I came out publicly to my four new college roommates one of them audaciously said, “It sucks to hear that you won't be going to heaven.” To which one of my other roommates abruptly replied, “Man, if you’re going to play that lame card then neither will you for not respecting and loving everyone just the way they are.” MMT
