Today, he thinks I left to visit my parents in Long Island. The truth is I'm never coming back. I promised myself that last time would be the last time he ever hit me. And I intend to keep that promise. MMT

Today, he has burn scars all over his body and the most beautiful wife and teenage daughter. When his wife was pregnant with his daughter, she collapsed upstairs in their two story home as it was burning to the ground. He ran into the house with a fire-retardant suit on (he used to be a firefighter), found his wife, put the suit on her and ran her back through the flames to safety. MMT

Today, he was hit by a car on the way to my house to talk me out of suicide. I flushed the pills down the toilet in the public restroom at the hospital once the doctors informed us that he’d make a full recovery. MMT

Today, my cat got out of my downtown condo and got lost. I was sad because I figured I’d never see her again. About 24 hours after I posted flyers on telephone poles in the city I received a call from a man who found my cat. It turned out the man was homeless and used 50 cents to call me from a payphone. He was insanely nice and even bought a can of food for my cat. I gave the man all the cash I had on me as a reward. MMT

Today, on my 30th birthday my mom handed me a sealed letter that I had to write for a school project when I was 14. The teacher had us write a short letter to our 30-year-old self that was supposed to act as a reminder to stay young at heart. I can’t believe my mom saved my letter. The last line read, “I look forward to meeting you someday.” MMT

Today, my friends and I are having a great vacation in Hawaii. I’m so honored that they all decided to join me. They assume the trip is in celebration of my impending victory with cancer. I don't have the heart to tell them my doctors told me it’s terminal and there’s nothing that can be done. I don’t want to spoil our time here. I only want to see their smiles. Because it’ll be the last time I see most of them. MMT

Today, my 7-year-old son curiously asked his great grandma why she decided to have a weird number tattooed on her arm. MMT

Today, at our college graduation ceremony, every time I looked her in the eyes I had to smile, because I was proudly walking beside the same girl that held my hand at the roller skating rink in the third grade. MMT

Today, as I watched my only son play with my grandson it made me smile, because I suddenly realized my son had become the loving father he never had. MMT

Today, my mom and dad are selling my home so my mom can move in with her new husband and my dad can move in with his new wife as I leave everything I've ever known behind. MMT

Today, after I inadvertently overheard them making fun of me, I actually began to smile. Not because they were making fun of me, but because I also overhead one of the kids in the group – the only one I have ever considered a friend – sticking up for me. It’s nice to know he truly is a friend even when I’m not around. MMT

Today, my 17-year-old daughter, Megan, didn’t put on any make-up. When I asked her why she said Katie, her 11-year-old little sister, started putting on makeup this morning too so she could be “beautiful.” Megan said she doesn’t ever want Katie to think she has to wear make-up to be beautiful. MMT

Today, at the final home game of the season, the entire boys basketball team at our high school entered the gymnasium in pairs of two holding hands. They did so in protest of the fact that two gay students had been sent to detention for a week for simply holding hands in the school’s hallways. MMT

Today, after severely injuring my back, losing my job because of it, being evicted from our apartment, moving in with my wife’s parents, nursing my 6 year old through a nearly fatal case of strep throat, I was sitting on the front porch feeling sorry for myself when one of my close friends called me crying and said, “Mel-Mel-Mellissa, my baby girl, just died in a car wreck.” And suddenly I felt like the lucky one. Today, I miss who I was. I miss the girl who had something to be proud of. I miss the girl who was genuinely happy in her own skin. I miss the girl who was innocent and free and thought for herself. I miss the girl who would look in the mirror and not see every flaw. I miss the girl who didn't let the negative words of others bother her. I’ve transformed myself to make everyone else like me. But now I don’t like me. I miss who I was. MMT

Today, I read several stories on MMT about people coming together and celebrating a person’s life after they committed suicide. And it makes me think society needs a wake-up call. Because if we all celebrated each other’s lives more often - while we’re all alive - there would be far fewer suicides. MMT

Today, after one of my 11th grade students told me she hated high school, I asked her, “Why?” She said, “In this school, the popular kids are the rudest, the nicest kids are the loneliest, and the girls everyone thinks are pretty spend more time putting on makeup every morning than they do studying. And although I force myself to smile when I’m here, I sometimes cry in the mornings because I dread coming here.” MMT

Today, when I told my grandma that I was worried about taking a chance and regretting my choice, she said, “Do you know what my biggest regret is? Not taking more chances on opportunities when I was your age.” MMT
