Today, after he said, “I forgive you,” I told him again how sorry I was and that I wish I could change the past. He stared at me quietly for a few seconds, put his hand on my cheek and said, “You don't forgive to change the past. You forgive to change the future.” MMT

Today, I found out that the very first person to ask me for my autograph killed herself yesterday after our band announced a permanent hiatus. Her brother came to see me today to inform me of the sad news. He said her suicide note clearly mentioned our band and our music as the primary reason she didn’t end her life sooner. In her honor, my bandmates and I have decided to keep the band together and begin working on another studio album. MMT

Today, after he told me, “Love is never planned. It doesn't need a reason. But when love is true it becomes your plan and your reason for living,” he looked me straight in the eyes, smiled and said, “Thank you for being my reason.” MMT

Today, my chemo therapy is making me lose chunks of my long, strawberry-blonde hair – a physical attribute I’ve always been proud of. This afternoon I had a male nurse shave my head because my hair was so patchy. As I was tearing up because it was hard seeing the rest of my hair fall to the floor, the nurse bent down in front of me and sincerely said, “Gosh, you have the most beautiful eyes.” MMT

Today, as I turned the page of a novel I rented from the city library, a $20 bill fell out of the book into my lap. There was a small post-it note stuck to it that read, “Always find a reason to smile. It may not add years to your life but will surely add life to your years. I hope my $20 just bought your smile.” And I did smile. And everyone I tell this story to smiles. MMT

Today, when I stood up for a classmate as a group of kids were teasing him for being gay, everyone started accusing me of being gay too. And even though I’m not gay, I got a small taste of the disgusting abuse this kid absorbs from school bullies on a daily basis. I’m so ashamed that 5 of these bullies are my teammates on the baseball team that I just quit the team 10 minutes ago. I certainly don’t need teammates like them. MMT

Today, I stared at the computer screen motionless in complete disbelief for several minutes when I saw that the man who raped me five years ago had joined a Facebook group I started for fellow rape victims. MMT

Today, after spending numerous nights out at bars, restaurants and night clubs all dressed up with my hair and make-up done, I’m marrying the man I met in Central Park on a Monday afternoon in the pouring rain while I was wearing sweat pants and a T-shirt. We both got stuck in a torrential downpour and sought cover under the same overhang to a public restroom. MMT

Today, I know three people who attended high school with me who committed suicide in the last ten years because they were struggling financially. MMT

Today, for my 30th birthday my mom mailed me my old high school diary. She put a post-it note on it that said, “Clearing old clutter, but figured you might want this.” I flipped through it quickly until the last entry caught my attention. I don’t even remember writing it. It reads, “This is the end. I’m moving on to a new beginning. Time to follow my heart and make my dreams a reality.” And 12 years later it makes me smile because I truly am living my dream of being a professional photographer. MMT

Today, our yearbook publishers crowned me with the title, “Best Smile.” And although I’m proud that my smile has positively impacted others, more than anything I hope that someday I won’t need to fake my smile every day. MMT

Today, I was walking to class through a packed school hallway when I heard people making racecar noises and honking at people. As the crowd cleared I realized it was a popular senior football player and a special needs freshman who were both laughing and pretending to drive through traffic together as they dodged people. The football player was simply helping the special needs kid get to his next class. MMT

Today, when I scolded her for answering her phone in the middle of my class she began crying, ran out of the classroom and didn’t return. Her father called me this afternoon to apologize on her behalf. All I can remember him saying is, “Her 9-year-old brother didn’t make it out of surgery this morning.” MMT

Today, when I opened my store at 5AM there was an envelope sitting on the floor that someone had dropped through the mail delivery hole in the front door. In the envelope was $600 and a note that said, “Five years ago, I broke into your store at night and stole $300 worth of food. I’m sorry. I was desperate. Here’s the money with 100% interest.” Interestingly, I never reported the incident to the cops because I assumed that whoever stole the food really needed it. MMT

Today, like I’ve been doing at least once a week for the last 6 months, I told her I love the artsy bracelets she wears. She always switches them up, and some of them she makes herself. But today she let me in on a secret. She lifted the bracelets to show me the scars on her wrists. She said, “I’m fine now, but there was a time when I wasn’t. I started wearing these bracelets for the wrong reasons, but now they make me smile.” MMT

Today, when the light turned green I took my foot off the brake and began to accelerate. Suddenly the woman in the car immediately to my left screamed, “STOP!” I heard her at the last second and slammed on my brakes just as an old pick-up truck blazed through the red light and across the intersection in front of me. Today... After 12 years in NYC, despite my fear of heights, I finally took a trip to the top of the Empire State Building. I survived. Despite my fear of darkness, I sat alone this afternoon in a pitch black room for an hour just thinking. I survived. And this evening, despite my fear of being heartbroken again, when he asked me out for the 3rd time, I finally said yes. MMT

Today, after 11 straight months I am finally on my way home from Iraq for good. One of my connecting flights landed in Atlanta and I barely had enough time to get to the next gate. When I got there, they informed me that the flight was overbooked and I was too late. A businesswoman who was the last person boarding the plane as I ran up to the gate overheard what happened, walked back to the gate agent and said, “Give this soldier my seat and book me on the next flight. He deserves to go home tonight.” MMT

Today marks the 20th anniversary of my sobriety. Exactly 20 years ago tonight I went into a drunken rage and slapped my girlfriend, who is now my wife, across the face. Instead of calling the cops like she probably should have, she calmed me down and helped me to check myself into rehab. I’ve been sober ever since that night. And we now have two beautiful children together. She’ll always be my hero. MMT

Today, during a medical relief visit in a small African town, we were robbed by 5 masked men with hand carved weapons. They demanded that we give them any food we had on us. Once we tossed them the few morsels of food we had in our bags they thanked us, apologized several times and then ran off into the brush. MMT
