Today, during my weekly visit to the nursing home to see my grandma I asked her how her week was and she said, “It was okay. Your hug got me though it.” “What hug?” I asked. “The hug you gave me last week. The hug itself may have lasted for only ten seconds, but my smile has lasted all week long.” So I gave her another big hug and setup an appointment to visit her tomorrow so she doesn’t have to wait another week. Today, on my parent’s 50th wedding anniversary my wife and I treated them out to a fancy dinner. When I asked my father to make a toast, he said “On a Friday evening roughly 51 years ago, when faced with helping one more customer who was knocking on my shop’s door or telling her that the shop was closed, I chose to help her with no way of knowing that she would be sitting at this table with me tonight.” MMT

After the diagnosis, my mom cried and told my dad, “I’m sorry. I don’t know how I got this way. You probably want out of this, don’t you?” He hugged her and said, “In sickness and in health, right? We’ll get through this together.” MMT

Today, during a suicide awareness discussion at school most of the students were being obnoxious and joking around about suicide. A guy who sits in the back of the class, who happens to be a well respected athlete on the football team, walked to the front of the class and rolled up his shirt sleeves to show everyone the old scars on his wrists. He said, “This stuff isn’t funny! There was a time when I was younger when I almost gave up.” His bold courage MMT.

Today she died when her car crashed through a guardrail on a bridge and plummeted 200 feet into the river below. Everyone is calling it a “tragic accident.” But yesterday she told me she was "tired of life" and wanted to “drive her car off a bridge.” I didn’t think she meant it literally. No one knows this but me. I don’t know what to do. MMT

Today, in the poor third world country where my family lives, a street child knocked on my car window begging for food. I gave the little girl a granola bar. She said, “Thank you,” and then immediately handed it to her little brother who was skin and bones. As I drove off I watched in my rearview mirror as she rubbed his back while he ate. MMT

Today, a sophomore at my high school who has Cerebral Palsy celebrated his 16th birthday. In the cafeteria at lunchtime a few of his friends put a candle in a cupcake and started singing “Happy Birthday” to him. By the time they got to the end of the song, almost every single student in the entire cafeteria was looking his way and singing to him. MMT

Today, at the age of 30 I’ve been happily married to my second husband, Mark, for almost 4 years. My first husband, Kevin, was one of the first soldiers killed in Afghanistan in 2003. I still wear the wedding band Kevin gave me right next to the wedding band Mark gave me. I do it to honor his life. But what most people find surprising is that Mark fully supports me in doing so, and even got Kevin’s ring engraved with “Rest in peace, hero.” MMT

Today, my mother’s 20 years of smoking cigarettes is finally catching up with her. Every time I hear the unhealthy gurgle of her coughing, I cringe and cry on the inside. And she knows it. But she doesn’t quit. And now that I’m pregnant, I just hope she’s around long enough for my son to remember her smile. MMT
