Today, I’ve been deployed in Iraq for almost 2 full years. My best friend, a fellow soldier, died a year and a half ago. Ever since then, every time my unit takes on gunfire I hope one of the bullets hits me square between the eyes. But somehow it just keeps happening to those around me. MMT

Today, my maid of honor (and best friend) in my wedding party is the girl I randomly sat next to in the school cafeteria 8 years ago when we were freshmen in high school. I sat next to her simply because she was sitting all by herself and I didn’t have anyone to sit next to either. MMT

Today was my father’s funeral (he died from a heart attack last week). He’s been a high school English teacher in a rough area of The Bronx most of his life. Over 300 of his students spanning multiple graduating classes over his 25 year tenure showed up at his funeral. And their reason was universal: “He was my favorite teacher. He made a difference.” MMT
