Today, on my 63rd birthday, on my final day on the police force, my partner and I engaged in what appeared to be a small speeding ticket, and resulted in a gun being fired at me for the first time in nearly a decade. Two bullets skimmed both of my ears, creating tiny burn wounds, but otherwise leaving me unharmed. MMT

Today, for the first time in over a year, I spent the whole day with my brother, Shawn, who has been in and out of rehab for drug abuse and depression for the better part of the past five years. Today, I had an overwhelming realization that brought me to tears… You could have fought for me in the slightest, Mom, and I would have forgiven you in a heartbeat. But now you've not been here for over half my life and I think it might be too late. The finality breaks my heart all over again, wondering how anyone could abandon their children for another partner. MMT

Today my colleague told me a story of his past where he was abandoned by his parents and left with barely any money to live off of. Many times, he would be so hungry that he'd eat out of the trash. He worked to put himself through middle school, high school and college. I would have never have imagined this part of his life, because he is so bright, outgoing and extremely successful in all that he does. His ability to thrive despite his past and scars MMT.

Today, after about two years I finally feel strong enough to move on. With a serious case of bipolar disorder, my mom had to go through seven sessions of shock therapy. She came back not knowing who I was, and was sent to rehab multiple times for suicide attempts. Today she still has little memory of my childhood, or the pain I suffered taking care of our family since I was a teenager. But I do still feel blessed to have my mom here with me today. MMT
