Today, on my grandparents’ anniversary, my grandfather finally went to join my grandmother after a month apart. Before she passed away at 99 after 7+ years of serious complications from a stroke, my grandfather would hobble over to the couch where she usually was laying (on his very bad knees), lean down (which was a struggle for him), and kiss her on the forehead. She would open her eyes and say “I love you, Daddy (everyone’s pet name for him),” and he would reply “I love you.” And then he would continue over to his chair and sit down to take a nap. Watching their love thrive until the end MMT.

Today, I received a belated Valentine's Day card from a girl in one of my classes. In the card she wrote, "I notice you're often running behind, so if you ever need to read my notes for class, or if you need help getting across campus, just let me know." I use a wheelchair, so I can't move quickly across campus when it's busy. I'm oftentimes late to my classes. This girl and I have never spoken more than a few "hellos" to each other. If more people had the ability to notice when others need help, even when they don't ask for it, this world be a better place. Her beautiful heart MMT.

Today, when I told him, “I’m sorry for your loss,” he smiled and said, “Don’t be. I’m one of the lucky ones – lucky to have had the most beautiful woman as my wife and best friend for 34 incredible years. I honestly feel blessed.” MMT

Today, one of my regular customers, an elderly woman who has been eating in our restaurant almost every evening for the better part of a decade, left me $1,000 in cash for her $12 meal. With the cash, she left a small post-it note that said, “Thank you for everything. Your smile and hospitable service over the years gave me something to look forward to every evening at dinnertime. In a way, you filled part of the void in my life after my husband passed away. Tomorrow morning I’m moving across the state to live with my son’s family. May the rest of your life treat you as well as you have treated me.” MMT

Today, on my 18th birthday, exactly 10 years after he lost his life in Iraq, I received a hand written letter from my father. It was postmarked overseas and accompanied by an anonymous post-it note that read, “Your father was a hero. He wrote this letter in the hospital 10 years ago. I’m just fulfilling my promise to him. He wanted you to have this for your 18th birthday. Happy birthday!” MMT

Today, I stumbled across this site. I immediately fell in love with it, and decided to read many stories. I came across one talking about how the writer's mother was cleared of cancer on his recent birthday. It was posted on my 16th birthday. I think it is a sign that my birthday wish for my mother's cancer to not come back just might come true. MMT

Today, because of my parent’s recent divorce and ongoing hostility, I could barely hold back my tears at school. My Chemistry teacher noticed and asked me to stay after class. We spent an hour after school ended just chatting in his classroom. His kindness helped me in more ways than he could ever imagine. MMT

Today, the very first homeless man we assisted at our shelter and soup kitchen is now the head chef and director of community affairs. MMT

Today, after my college graduation ceremony, I went out to eat with my grandfather. When I asked him what his best advice for me was, as I prepare for a big move to New York City for a job next week, he grabbed a napkin off the table and wrote this: “Don’t sweat the small stuff. Live simply. Love generously. Speak truthfully. Work diligently. Then let go and let what's meant to be, BE.” MMT

Today, before I burned it in our fireplace, I re-read the suicide note I wrote five years ago, and instantly began crying with tears of joy… thankful that my best friend, who’s now my wife, showed up at my front door that day to tell me she was worried about me. MMT

Today, my planning came in handy. When I was younger, one thing I used to obsess about was how I'd get my dog out of my window to save him if our house caught on fire. This afternoon, I used my plan to save my two baby sisters, my mom, my dog, and myself. MMT

Today, I now realize I never knew what I wanted from life when I was growing up, except to be a better dad to my children than mine was to me. And now when my daughters hug me and call me the “best daddy in the world” I truly feel like I have it all. MMT

Today, it’s been 11 years since my mom beat cancer, and 10 years since she started an incredibly successful non-profit which has helped thousands of homeless men and women get back on their feet. During a conversation today about the ups and downs of life, my mom smiled and said, “Sometimes things have to go very wrong before they can be right. Sometimes you have to go through the worst, to arrive at your best.” MMT

Today, my mom told me that she never expected herself to survive to see the 10 year anniversary of the day they told her my dad had been killed in Iraq. "I was so depressed for so long," she said. "But I had a six-year-old son - you - who needed me. So I held on somehow, and now I'm so happy I did." MMT

Today, in downtown Chicago, I saw a homeless man help a young man in a business suit after he slipped on ice and landed hard on his back. The homeless man helped the young man up and then collected the papers that had fallen out of the young man’s briefcase. Both men then stood their talking to each other for a couple minutes, and then the young man took off his heavy leather jacket and handed it to the homeless man just before jumping in a cab. MMT

Today, as I rested my head on my father’s shoulder and cried about the stress I’m dealing with in school – my grades, the bullies, my anxieties, etc. – my dad rubbed my back and said, “Jamie, you have to remember that happiness begins to arrive when you stop over-thinking your problems and you start being grateful for all the problems you don't have.” MMT

Today, at 7-Eleven, a young kid begged his father who was in front of me in line for two quarters. His father gave him four quarters. The kid then quickly walked up to the counter and placed each quarter, one at a time, into a donation cup that said, “Buy a hungry child a meal this holiday season.” MMT

Today, as he rocked back and forth in his rocking chair, I asked my grandfather why he didn’t ask for anything from anyone this year for Christmas. He smiled and replied, “ I think as you grow older, your Christmas list gets smaller and the things you really want for the holidays can't be bought.” MMT

Today, in South Congress (a hippie part of town in Austin), my car broke down in the middle of the street. A homeless man who had been resting nearby helped me push my car into a parking lot. Then, after telling him that my mobile phone was dead, he dug into his pocket and gave me 50 cents so I could use the pay phone across the street to call my roommate. MMT

Today, I went out to lunch with my dad and he randomly stopped at a farmer’s market on the way home to get my mom flowers and homemade chocolates. “Why now?” I asked. “Why not now? If not now, then when? Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed to us.” he replied. And then I suddenly remembered that my mom was my dad’s second wife. His first wife passed away in a car accident sometime before their first wedding anniversary. MMT
