Today, after a brutal divorce four years ago, I find myself wrongfully doubting my boyfriend of two years on a regular basis. It creates stress in our relationship, and I know he doesn’t deserve it. When I asked my mother for advice this afternoon, she simply said, “Dear, The only way to find out if you can trust somebody is to trust them.” MMT

Today, I found out that my 64-year-old employee’s wife passed away over a decade ago. This took me by surprise because he talks about her on a regular basis, and until now he had never mentioned that she was deceased. When he mentioned it, I said, “Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t realize she had passed away.” He said, “Oh, I don’t talk about her death often. I prefer to talk about the beautiful way she lived.” MMT

Today, a teenager knocked on our front door and returned my 74-year-old mother in-law’s wallet completely intact that she had lost at the mall, including the $380 in cash she had in it. My mother in-law was so appreciative, she gave the teenager $200 as a reward. Later this evening our doorbell rang and it was a flower delivery service with a dozen roses for my mother in-law. The card read, “On your ID I noticed it was your birthday yesterday. Happy belated birthday!” MMT

Today, in Cambodia, three young boys who were starving to death when I arrived here last year for a 12-month humanitarian effort just received a clean bill of health from our staff doctor. They each put on roughly 40 pounds of weight. MMT

Today, a fire broke out in the nursing home where I work. One of the male nurses carried 5 elderly men and women one at a time to safety all by himself through a smoke filled hallway while several other hospital staff members, including myself, panicked and waited for the fire department to arrive. Today, I have Stage 2 Lymphoma (cancer). This evening a good friend of mine – a girl I’ve had a crush on for 10 years (since 5th grade) – came to my hospital room with a movie and flowers. She snuggled with me and we kissed for the very first time. She said she’s sticking with me through this, and she made me promise to take her out of a romantic date as soon as I have my strength back. MMT

Today, my mom is paralyzed from the waist down. She has been like this for 17 years, after a car accident where she swerved her car to avoid young child who ran into the street. My mom lost control of her car and skidded off a hill hood first into a drainage canal. The little child is now 20-years-old and brings my mom flowers, mows my parent’s lawn for free, and offers other forms of assistance on a weekly basis without being asked. MMT

Today, as we sat across from each other at the coffee shop, she reached her hand across the table and held my hand. She said, “Sometimes, reaching out and taking someone's hand is the beginning of a journey to feeling better. At other times, it is allowing another to take yours. I'm here and I'm listening.” I proceeded to spill my guts about all my fears and the reasons I haven't gotten any sleep lately. And for the first time this afternoon, I was able to sleep without tossing and turning. MMT

Today, we celebrated my cancer’s recent remission with a vacation in the Florida Keys where we met 10 years ago. She asked me to marry her seven years ago, a day after I was diagnosed with cancer. Today, I find myself thinking back to something I saw on the local news about a year ago. A teen football player had died in a car accident. The cameras showed all his friends after the funeral - these big hulking guys, all in tears, saying, “I loved him. We all loved him so much.” I started crying, too, and I wondered if these guys had told the football player they loved him while he was alive, or whether it was only with death that this strange word, love, could be used. I vowed then and there that I would never hesitate to speak up to the people I loved. They deserved to know they gave meaning to my life. They deserved to know I thought the world of them. MMT

Today, as I was shopping I almost walked by an old man who was standing outside in the cold weather handing out fliers. As I slowed down he told me that for a small donation he would give me a piece of his original poetry. He was saving up to have his poetry book bound and published. He was very close to making his dream come true. I gave him the spare change I had. MMT we are never too old to pursue our dreams, and the poem was beautiful.

Today, I was in line at a hotdog stand that was selling hotdogs for charity for $2.50. A homeless man approached me and asked for a dollar toward a hotdog. I looked in my wallet and handed him a $5 bill – the smallest bill I had. He got in line behind me and bought two hotdogs. Then I watched as he excitedly gifted one to a homeless woman who was resting under a nearby tree. MMT
