Today, I am alive 40 years after my best friend donated his kidney to me and saved my life. We are now in our early 80’s and still enjoy each other’s company on a daily basis. MMT

Today, I interviewed a very successful businessman who also happens to be a quadriplegic. When I asked him what the number one thing was that led to his success, he paused for a moment and said, “It was a change in mindset that happened about two years after I lost movement in my body. I started living life like I had a lot less to lose.” MMT

Today, the kitten that was run over by a car, needing one of her front legs to be amputated, that I nursed back to health despite a grim outlook by the veterinary doctor, celebrated her 20th birthday in perfect health. MMT

Today, at a SXSW concert in Austin, I saw an elderly couple who had to be in their early 80’s dancing harder and singing louder than everyone else around me. Between songs, I told them how inspiring it was that they were still out partying and enjoying themselves. The woman looked at me, smiled wide, and said, "Dear... Do it till ya can't do it! You won’t regret it!" MMT

Today, as a city council member I gave out medals to marathon winners. The young woman in first place used to be a student of mine when I was a teacher over a decade ago. I always felt sorry for her because she wasn't supposed to live past her 16th birthday. She is now 27 and going strong. Her victories in life MMT.

Today, I turned 21 years old despite my doctor's prediction that I "would likely never" make it past my 18th birthday with my cancer. MMT

Today, I know "vomit-free since 2008" doesn't sound cool, but as a recovering bulimic of over 20 years, I wear that title now proudly. MMT

Today, as people in my English group talked about how pathetic it is for people to cut, I simply looked at my wrist and said "I will not pretend I do not have scars, but I am going to take this moment to celebrate the skin between them". MMT

Today, the scar on my wrist reminds me that I was once very sad after my husband passed away, but now the ring on my finger tells me it is possible to be happy, very happy, again. MMT

Today, I realize the feeling I was hopelessly chasing during my pill-popping years, was the feeling I now get every day holding my newborn son. MMT

Today, on my grandparents’ anniversary, my grandfather finally went to join my grandmother after a month apart. Before she passed away at 99 after 7+ years of serious complications from a stroke, my grandfather would hobble over to the couch where she usually was laying (on his very bad knees), lean down (which was a struggle for him), and kiss her on the forehead. She would open her eyes and say “I love you, Daddy (everyone’s pet name for him),” and he would reply “I love you.” And then he would continue over to his chair and sit down to take a nap. Watching their love thrive until the end MMT.

Today, I received a belated Valentine's Day card from a girl in one of my classes. In the card she wrote, "I notice you're often running behind, so if you ever need to read my notes for class, or if you need help getting across campus, just let me know." I use a wheelchair, so I can't move quickly across campus when it's busy. I'm oftentimes late to my classes. This girl and I have never spoken more than a few "hellos" to each other. If more people had the ability to notice when others need help, even when they don't ask for it, this world be a better place. Her beautiful heart MMT.

Today, when I told him, “I’m sorry for your loss,” he smiled and said, “Don’t be. I’m one of the lucky ones – lucky to have had the most beautiful woman as my wife and best friend for 34 incredible years. I honestly feel blessed.” MMT

Today, one of my regular customers, an elderly woman who has been eating in our restaurant almost every evening for the better part of a decade, left me $1,000 in cash for her $12 meal. With the cash, she left a small post-it note that said, “Thank you for everything. Your smile and hospitable service over the years gave me something to look forward to every evening at dinnertime. In a way, you filled part of the void in my life after my husband passed away. Tomorrow morning I’m moving across the state to live with my son’s family. May the rest of your life treat you as well as you have treated me.” MMT

Today, on my 18th birthday, exactly 10 years after he lost his life in Iraq, I received a hand written letter from my father. It was postmarked overseas and accompanied by an anonymous post-it note that read, “Your father was a hero. He wrote this letter in the hospital 10 years ago. I’m just fulfilling my promise to him. He wanted you to have this for your 18th birthday. Happy birthday!” MMT

Today, I stumbled across this site. I immediately fell in love with it, and decided to read many stories. I came across one talking about how the writer's mother was cleared of cancer on his recent birthday. It was posted on my 16th birthday. I think it is a sign that my birthday wish for my mother's cancer to not come back just might come true. MMT
