Today, my planning came in handy. When I was younger, one thing I used to obsess about was how I'd get my dog out of my window to save him if our house caught on fire. This afternoon, I used my plan to save my two baby sisters, my mom, my dog, and myself. MMT

Today, I now realize I never knew what I wanted from life when I was growing up, except to be a better dad to my children than mine was to me. And now when my daughters hug me and call me the “best daddy in the world” I truly feel like I have it all. MMT

Today, it’s been 11 years since my mom beat cancer, and 10 years since she started an incredibly successful non-profit which has helped thousands of homeless men and women get back on their feet. During a conversation today about the ups and downs of life, my mom smiled and said, “Sometimes things have to go very wrong before they can be right. Sometimes you have to go through the worst, to arrive at your best.” MMT

Today, my mom told me that she never expected herself to survive to see the 10 year anniversary of the day they told her my dad had been killed in Iraq. "I was so depressed for so long," she said. "But I had a six-year-old son - you - who needed me. So I held on somehow, and now I'm so happy I did." MMT

Today, in downtown Chicago, I saw a homeless man help a young man in a business suit after he slipped on ice and landed hard on his back. The homeless man helped the young man up and then collected the papers that had fallen out of the young man’s briefcase. Both men then stood their talking to each other for a couple minutes, and then the young man took off his heavy leather jacket and handed it to the homeless man just before jumping in a cab. MMT

Today, as I rested my head on my father’s shoulder and cried about the stress I’m dealing with in school – my grades, the bullies, my anxieties, etc. – my dad rubbed my back and said, “Jamie, you have to remember that happiness begins to arrive when you stop over-thinking your problems and you start being grateful for all the problems you don't have.” MMT

Today, at 7-Eleven, a young kid begged his father who was in front of me in line for two quarters. His father gave him four quarters. The kid then quickly walked up to the counter and placed each quarter, one at a time, into a donation cup that said, “Buy a hungry child a meal this holiday season.” MMT

Today, as he rocked back and forth in his rocking chair, I asked my grandfather why he didn’t ask for anything from anyone this year for Christmas. He smiled and replied, “ I think as you grow older, your Christmas list gets smaller and the things you really want for the holidays can't be bought.” MMT

Today, in South Congress (a hippie part of town in Austin), my car broke down in the middle of the street. A homeless man who had been resting nearby helped me push my car into a parking lot. Then, after telling him that my mobile phone was dead, he dug into his pocket and gave me 50 cents so I could use the pay phone across the street to call my roommate. MMT

Today, I went out to lunch with my dad and he randomly stopped at a farmer’s market on the way home to get my mom flowers and homemade chocolates. “Why now?” I asked. “Why not now? If not now, then when? Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed to us.” he replied. And then I suddenly remembered that my mom was my dad’s second wife. His first wife passed away in a car accident sometime before their first wedding anniversary. MMT

Today, I ran into an old high school student of mine at the doctor’s office. She dropped out of my Calculus 2 class to have a baby when she was a Junior. I felt horrible for her at the time, because I knew how smart she was. I thought she was wasting her intelligence. I ran into her at the doctor’s today because she is now my grandson’s pediatrician. Today, it’s been 10 years since my mother passed away on my 12th birthday. One of the final conversations with her was about college. She told me she was worried I would not go to college without her around to motivate me. Of course, I promised her I WOULD go to college and graduate. And today I graduated at the top of my class from NC Chapel Hill. MMT

Today, my sister turned 10. She has a severe mental handicap that interferes with her ability to talk. It takes her a long time to memorize a word and get it right. In fact, there are only 20 words she can say properly and in context. One of them is my name. MMT

Today, when I came out publicly at school, one of my classmates shamelessly said, “It sucks to hear you won't be going to heaven.” To which another classmate of mine immediately replied, “Man, if you’re going to play that lame card then neither will you, for not respecting and loving everyone just the way they are.” MMT

Today, my puppy got out of my apartment and wandered off. I was upset because I figured I’d never see him again. Within a few hours of posting flyers around the city I received a call from a man who found my puppy. It turned out the man was homeless and used change to call me from a payphone. He was REALLY nice and even bought a small bag of treats for my puppy. I bought the man dinner, gave him my shoes (his were really tattered), and gave him $100 as a reward. MMT

Today, I re-read the suicide letter I wrote on Thanksgiving 1993 about two minutes before my girlfriend showed up at my apartment and told me, “I’m pregnant.” She was honestly the only reason I didn’t follow through with it. Suddenly I felt I had something to live for. Today she’s my wife, and we’ve been happily married for 18 years. And my daughter, who is now a 19-year-old college student, has two younger brothers. I re-read my suicide letter every Thanksgiving as a reminder to be thankful – I am thankful I got a second chance at life. MMT

Today, I asked my 94 year old grandmother, who I adore, what she thought life was all about and she said, "I don't think about those type of things. I just keep my eyes and ears wide open, and enjoy as much of right now as possible." MMT

Today, an elderly man with a walker, who looked like he could barely stand up on his own while holding a small bag of groceries, held the door open for me on the way out of the grocery store. MMT
