Today, my 17-year-old daughter, Megan, didn’t put on any make-up. When I asked her why she said Katie, her 11-year-old little sister, started putting on makeup this morning too so she could be “beautiful.” Megan said she doesn’t ever want Katie to think she has to wear make-up to be beautiful. MMT

Today, as Jason (our star quarterback aka Mr. Popular) and Carly (a sweet plain Jane type) walked by holding hands I overheard a girl in my class ask a friend, “What do you think Jason sees in her? I mean, she is nothing special to look at. He can have any girl he wants.” Her friend replied, “Well, my mom says good looks attracts the eyes, but personality attracts the heart.” MMT

Today, out the front window of my house I saw a mail man across the street juggling several large boxes in his hands. As he approached an apartment complex an elderly woman was carrying her groceries up the front stairs of the building. The mail man put down all of his boxes and assisted the woman with getting her groceries up the stairs. MMT

Today, after spending almost an entire year in a wheel chair with a severe back injury after I was hit by a car while riding my bicycle last spring, I took my first steps without assistance. The doctors say with regular physical therapy I should be back on my feet fulltime within the next few months. MMT

Today, my husband and I live in Buffalo, New York. We are both in our 80’s and just had a heavy snow storm here. This morning as we were trying our best to shovel our driveway, two teenagers who we have never met before saw us struggling as they were driving by in their car. They pulled over and assisted us for nearly 30 minutes with shoveling the rest of the snow. Then they refused a tip and drove off. MMT

Today, at the Burger King where I work there was a group of 10 teenagers sitting outside harassing a homeless man who was trying to sleep on a bus stop bench. After several minutes of wise cracks, all of the kids left except for one. He came into our restaurant and ordered a value meal to go. He walked back outside, handed it to the homeless man and jogged off in the direction his friends headed. MMT

Today, after he said, “I forgive you,” I told him again how sorry I was and that I wish I could change the past. He stared at me quietly for a few seconds, put his hand on my cheek and said, “You don't forgive to change the past. You forgive to change the future.” MMT

Today, as I turned the page of a novel I rented from the city library, a $20 bill fell out of the book into my lap. There was a small post-it note stuck to it that read, “Always find a reason to smile. It may not add years to your life but will surely add life to your years. I hope my $20 just bought your smile.” And I did smile. And everyone I tell this story to smiles. MMT

Today, when I opened my store at 5AM there was an envelope sitting on the floor that someone had dropped through the mail delivery hole in the front door. In the envelope was $600 and a note that said, “Five years ago, I broke into your store at night and stole $300 worth of food. I’m sorry. I was desperate. Here’s the money with 100% interest.” Interestingly, I never reported the incident to the cops because I assumed that whoever stole the food really needed it. MMT

Today, like I’ve been doing at least once a week for the last 6 months, I told her I love the artsy bracelets she wears. She always switches them up, and some of them she makes herself. But today she let me in on a secret. She lifted the bracelets to show me the scars on her wrists. She said, “I’m fine now, but there was a time when I wasn’t. I started wearing these bracelets for the wrong reasons, but now they make me smile.” MMT

Today... After 12 years in NYC, despite my fear of heights, I finally took a trip to the top of the Empire State Building. I survived. Despite my fear of darkness, I sat alone this afternoon in a pitch black room for an hour just thinking. I survived. And this evening, despite my fear of being heartbroken again, when he asked me out for the 3rd time, I finally said yes. MMT

Today, after 11 straight months I am finally on my way home from Iraq for good. One of my connecting flights landed in Atlanta and I barely had enough time to get to the next gate. When I got there, they informed me that the flight was overbooked and I was too late. A businesswoman who was the last person boarding the plane as I ran up to the gate overheard what happened, walked back to the gate agent and said, “Give this soldier my seat and book me on the next flight. He deserves to go home tonight.” MMT

Today is the 10 year anniversary of the day I had planned on committing suicide. It’s also the 10 year anniversary of the day I found out I was pregnant with my now 9-year-old son. He’s the reason I changed my mind. He was so worth it. And now I realize I was worth it too. MMT

Today, my mother was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. My parents have been fighting a lot recently because of it I think. My mom just blows up on my dad all the time. After the diagnosis, my mom cried and told my dad, “I’m sorry. I don’t know how I got this way. You probably want out of this, don’t you?” He hugged her and said, “In sickness and in health, right? We’ll get through this together.” MMT

Today, a sophomore at my high school who has Cerebral Palsy celebrated his 16th birthday. In the cafeteria at lunchtime a few of his friends put a candle in a cupcake and started singing “Happy Birthday” to him. By the time they got to the end of the song, almost every single student in the entire cafeteria was looking his way and singing to him. MMT
