Today, I casually asked one of my best students – always polite and super smart – why she loves reading novels. It came up in conversation because it has always impressed me that she is reading a new novel before class every couple of days. But her response floored me. “Honestly, I read because, for just a little while, I'm living someone else's life and not mine. Which helps me cope with reality by dulling it a bit,” she said. I was caught off-guard. I didn’t know how to respond. She always seems so confident and content. MMT

Today, my sister and I were in a bad car accident. Luckily both of us were wearing our seatbelts and didn’t have any life threatening injuries. My sister is Mrs. Popular at school – she knows everyone. I’m a bit of an introvert – I hang-out with the same 2 girls all the time. My sister immediately posted a comment on Facebook about our accident. And while all her friends were commenting, my 2 friends showed up independently at the scene of the accident before the paramedics arrived. MMT

Today, I’m “cancer free.” Which has me sitting here thinking, “life is a roller coaster.” When I was 20 my parents, thankfully, got me the therapy I needed after I nearly killed myself from a pain killer overdose after a guy broke my heart. 5 years later, when I finally considered myself ‘healed,’ I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was told my time was limited. That everything was uncertain. And just as I began to accept my fate, doctors told me the surgery and chemo worked. That was yesterday. And today is my 27th birthday. Today was the tenth anniversary of my little sister’s death. She died in a car accident when we were both teenagers. I’m 26 now and think about her all the time. This evening, after a rough day, I was sitting on my bed, staring at her picture on my nightstand when a sudden gust of wind blasted through my bedroom window for a few seconds, blowing my sister’s photo off my nightstand, directly into my lap. Today, my car broke down on the side of the road. As I fumbled around under the hood for about 45 minutes, 11 different people pulled up behind me to see if I needed a hand. MMT

Today, my 7-year-old son hugged me and said, “You have been better to me, daddy, since you and mommy stopped living together.” MMT

Today, had I ignored my little sister’s call when I saw her number, like I have numerous times before, she would be dead. But I still feel like a horrible sister, even though she calls me her hero. MMT

Today, I went to the hospital to see my brother who was just t-boned at an intersection by a drunk driver. As I walked into the room where they told me he was, the doctors were placing a white blanket over the body lying on the bed. I began to freak out. But then a nurse informed me that I was in the wrong room. My brother was in the room next door, with non-lethal injuries. The body on the bed belonged to the drunk driver. MMT

Today, I woke up from an afternoon nap on my grandma’s couch to find out that while we were both napping, she passed away next to me in her sleep. MMT

Today, as I sat in the plastic surgeon’s office waiting for the doctor to remove my birthmark, the nurse who had helped me early walked into the room, sat down next to me and said she used to have a birthmark just like mine. She then showed me the hideous scar that replaced it. I decided to keep my birthmark. MMT

Today, my grandma is enrolled in two college classes that interest her, she’s traveled more in the last few months than she ever has before, and she recently went deep sea fishing, skydiving and learned to sail a sailboat all for the very first time. When I asked her why she suddenly decided to do all of this, she said, “When grandpa passed away last year, I realized I was running out of time.” MMT

Today, only one of my brothers is still alive. I was the oldest of three. My two younger brothers, Shawn and Jason, were fraternal twins. Jason was born with a weak liver. In his mid 20’s his liver began to fail. Doctors gave him 12 months to live without a liver transplant. In his 11th month, as he was desperately waiting on a donors list for a liver with the right blood type, Shawn died in a car wreck. Shawn became Jason’s donor. Now, 35 years later, Jason is a healthy grandfather of two. MMT

Today, 5 years after my mom lost her battle with cancer, my dad started dating again. He was worried about how I would feel about it, but I fully support him. This evening, after his date, I heard him talking in his bedroom. I thought perhaps his date came back with him. But when I listened closely, I heard him talking to my mom, telling her how hard it is and how much he misses her. And promising that no matter what, she will always be the love of his life. MMT

Today, the cop took the handcuffs off of me and told me to “get out of here now” as soon as he heard from 20+ eyewitnesses that I had only given the two gangster-wannabes black eyes after they purposely knocked a homeless vet out of his wheelchair and stood over him laughing and kicking dirt at him. Today, at a school-sponsored group therapy class, I publicly admitted my past depression and failed suicide attempt, which had arisen from extreme loneliness. As I held onto my best friend, crying, I felt a tear fall onto my arm. And I realized, it was hers, not mine. MMT

Today, as my grandmother rested in her hospital bed, she grabbed my hand and said, “Learn to appreciate the things you have before time forces you appreciate the things you once had.” MMT

Today, I was stopped at an empty intersection around 10PM when the light turned green. I was just about to accelerate when my husband called me long distance from his business trip overseas. I pressed my foot back down on the brake pedal and answered my phone just as a car blazed through the red light and across the intersection in front of me. MMT

Today, I pulled into the gas station across from a guy who was already filling up his Cadillac Escalade. I got out of my Toyota Prius and gassed-up. When I drove off, the guy was still standing there pumping gas. MMT

Today, I was about to commit suicide while my iPod was playing through my headphones. I didn't, just because I didn't want the music to stop. It sounds crazy, but in that moment music made me realize that there are small things worth living for, even when everything else seems to be a disaster in my life. MMT

Today, over breakfast my wife told me she was upset that I hadn’t been wearing the (ugly) wrist watch she bought me last month for our 10 year anniversary. I didn’t have the heart to tell her I didn’t like it. So for the very first time, I wore it to work. This evening as I walking to my car I was mugged at gunpoint. But the only thing the mugger asked for was my wrist watch. MMT
