Today, in the background over the phone, I heard my 7-year-old son ask my wife, “If daddy’s job is going so well, how come he’s never home here with us?” MMT

Today, I was one of the paramedics on the scene where a professional skydiving instructor died due to a parachute failure. As we loaded the man’s body into the back of the ambulance, I noticed his t-shirt. It said, “I died doing what I love.” MMT

Today, I asked my 90-year-old grandfather what he thought life was all about and he replied, “I don't waste time thinking about those types of things. I go outside, breath the air, wave to the neighbors, smile at strangers and live before I no longer can.” MMT

Today, I watched in horror through the kitchen window as my 2-year-old slipped and fell head first into the pool. But before I could get to her, our Labrador Retriever, Rex, jumped in after her, grabbed her by her shirt collar and pulled her to the shallow steps where she could stand. MMT

Today, my parachute and my reserve did not deploy. Luckily I was sky diving with a friend who hadn’t yet deployed his parachute. He noticed me panicking, dropped over, strapped me to his harness and deployed his parachute. We landed safely together. MMT

Today, my dad saw the tears in my eyes and asked, “You’re not crying over him again, are you?” “Just let me be,” I said. He started walking out of the room, then turned around and said, “If someone won't lift a finger to call you, see you and spend time with you, it's time for you to lift five fingers and wave goodbye.” MMT

Today, I crawled out of a smoking, twisted pile of metal on the side of the road without a scratch. When I hydroplaned on the freeway going 75 mph and wrapped my Toyota Corolla around a telephone pole, the only part of the vehicle that wasn’t smashed to smithereens was the space around the driver’s seat. I had just dropped my little brother off at school, and I was the only one in the car. MMT

Today, I am 58 years old. I learned CPR when I was a lifeguard at a local pool when I was a teenager. I never had to perform CPR on someone until this afternoon. And when the paramedics arrived, they told me I undoubtedly saved my husband’s life. MMT

Today, as I was being mugged at gunpoint by a woman dressed like a nun, a scary looking guy wearing a black trench coat, who I had avoided earlier when I entered the train station by walking to the opposite end of the station where the nun was standing, snuck up behind the nun, disarmed her, and held her down until the police arrived. Today, my father celebrated his 85th birthday in his hospice bed. Our entire family gathered in his room to celebrate with him. It was a bittersweet experience. And a few hours before he passed he used every bit of strength he had to read a love letter aloud to us that my mom had written to him back in 1946 when they first started dating. MMT

Today, I was baby-sitting my four younger siblings at the park when my youngest sister, who is four-years-old, suddenly ran out into the street right in front of a lifted pick-up truck. The driver slammed on his brakes, but it was too late, he had driven over the top of her. Amazingly, my sister panicked and fell flat on her stomach when she saw the truck coming, and she passed directly between the wheels, unharmed. MMT

Today, I was unexpectedly laid-off at the web design company where I work, and when I got out to my car it had been towed because, according the tow company, I was “about two inches over the red fire lane.” So I waved down a cab. The driver asked me how my day was going and I told him. He said, “Oddly enough, I just finished dropping off one of my regular customers. She’s the owner of a start-up web design company and she just finished telling me she was looking for more help.” He gave me her business card and I called her as soon as I got home. We had a great conversation and I have a face-to-face interview tomorrow at 8AM. MMT

Today, my oldest son who graduated valedictorian at his high school and then graduated from Dartmouth College with a degree in finance is now the CFO for my youngest son’s multi-million dollar computer software company, which he started at the age of 17 after he, much to my dismay at the time, dropped out of high school during his senior year to “pursue his dream.” MMT

Today in Santo Domingo, roughly ten seconds after I gave a street peddler some change, a man walked out of an alleyway with a knife and tried to mug me. The street peddler walked up behind the mugger and slammed a broomstick across the side of his head, knocking him out cold. MMT

Today, as we were slowing down at a red light, my father scolded me for not having my seat belt on. No more than a second after the clicking sound of me buckling my seat belt, our small car was clipped from behind by a pick-up truck, spinning us 180 degrees in the middle of the street. Because we both had our seat belts on, and the fact that the impact came from behind, my father and I walked away with minor injuries. MMT

Today, at 4PM I pulled over to help a man (who turned out to be a paramedic) push his car out of the road. After looking under the hood for a few minutes we both agreed his radiator needed to be replaced. He told me he was running late to work, so I used my AAA card to get him a free tow and ride to a repair shop next to the hospital. Exactly an hour later I called 911 when my son’s best friend fainted and stopped breathing after an asthma attack. The same paramedic, Jake, showed up at my house, performed CPR on my son’s friend until he was breathing again, and took him to the hospital. MMT

Today, while my brother was drunk, he wrote a suicide note and posted it to his personal blog. An anonymous reader from California saw it a few minutes after he posted it, Googled his home address and called the local police dispatch in Raleigh, NC. The paramedics found my brother unconscious on his bed with an empty Vicodin container next to him. They were able to pump his stomach and save his life. MMT
