Today, after spending nearly 24 years of my life self conscious of being a 6’2 tall woman, and being taller than most of the guys, I fell in love and married a guy in a wheelchair. MMT

Today it’s been 28 years since my mom dropped out of college to take care of me (I was an unexpected pregnancy). Then came my brother, and then my sister, and then my youngest sister. My mom has been busy for a long time. But this afternoon my siblings and I joined my dad in applauding her as we watched her walk the stage to receive her bachelor’s degree. “I’m so proud to be finishing what I started so long ago,” she told us afterward. Today, after nearly 12 years without a intelligible word spoken, my deaf-mute daughter hugged me tight and said, “I love my daddy!” MMT

Today, a day after my 18th birthday, as I was helping my dad clear some old boxes out of the basement, he suddenly exclaimed, “Oh my gosh! I thought I lost this tape!” He held up an old VHS tape. On it was video footage of him and my mom from the year before I was born. My mom passed away while giving birth to me. I have seen several pictures of her, but never any video. So today, for the very first time, I got to hear my mom’s voice. MMT

Today, I accidentally sent a text message intended for my husband to my father-in-law. Luckily it only said “I love you.” My father-in-law sent me a really sweet reply and signed it “Love, Dad” for the first time since we’ve been family. MMT

Today, I’m in the Marines and currently stationed in Korea. This morning it was particularly rainy and dreary. Before I was on duty while I was walking to work I decided to splash through a big puddle on the sidewalk like I used to do as a little kid. A Major stopped me and asked, “What are you doing, soldier?” I replied, “Letting my inner child out while I walk, Sir!” He smiled and said, “Carry on, soldier!” As he walked away he purposely jumped up and splashed a puddle himself, laughed, and walked out of sight. Today, as I was driving to work, a police cruiser in front of me suddenly put on its lights and stopped traffic on the road for no apparent reason. I was starting to get annoyed until I saw the policeman running back and forth across the street trying to convince a mother duck and her 11 chicks to get out of the road. MMT

Today, I was expecting an important USPS package. I usually never get home from work in time to sign for my packages, so I always get the standard “pick up your package” slip. So today, to avoid this, I left work early and rushed home, only to find the slip in my mailbox. Bummed, I went into my room to relax for a few minutes and the doorbell rang. It was the mailman, who said, “I saw you drive into the neighborhood, so I came back to give you your package.” MMT

Today, I work at a high school as guidance counselor, and today was ‘music genre day.’ The principal and administrative staff encouraged teachers and students to dress (appropriately) in a way that symbolizes their favorite musical style. I dressed in the grunge style (a flannel shirt, jeans, and messy hair) much like I did in middle and high school. After work I stopped by the nursing home to see my grandmother who has Alzheimer's. And for the first time in almost two years, she recognized me! She said, “My sweet Katie!” as soon as she saw me. MMT

Today, I was in Central Park trying to write a new chapter in my novel. The writing was going at a snail's pace – I just couldn’t seem to type the right words. And I began to get frustrated and depressed. Then out of left field, an attractive woman sitting on a bench across the path from me got up, walked over to me, smiled, placed a paper on my table, and left without a word. It was a gorgeous sketch of me thinking and writing. I instantly smiled and wrote the rest of the chapter with a grin. And when I was done writing, I realized her name and phone number were written on the backside of the sketch. MMT

Today, I had my headphones on and was lost in thought as I was walking to work when someone suddenly tapped me on the shoulder. I looked up to see a girl that looked just like me staring back at me. It turns out that I have had an identical twin for the last two decades and didn’t even know it. We were both adopted by separate parents when we were infants, and our parents weren’t even aware of the other twin. This evening a helpful nurse at the hospital in Nicaragua where we were born looked up our old records and confirmed the fact that we were in fact twin sisters. MMT

Today, I was at a baseball game with my girlfriend. It was the first game she had ever been to. She talked the whole time about wishing she could catch a home run. When a ball came soaring in our direction, a young teenage boy sitting in front of us caught it. He immediately turned around and offered it to my girlfriend and me. We thanked him and insisted that he keep the ball. But his kindness, especially at his age, MMT.

Today, I went in for an interview for a teaching position at a high school in South Florida. I felt like I recognized the male interviewer, who was the Math and Science department head. Then towards the end of the interview, after lots of small talk, it became clear that the interviewer was my biological father. My mom had taken me and abandoned him when I was 5-years-old, and it was the first time I’d seen him in almost 20 years. We went out for coffee afterwards and caught up. And I got the job, so now I’ll have a lot of time to get to know my father, MMT

Today, it’s been two years nice my mom lost her battle with cancer. She was 40 at the time and I was 13. Since then her best friend, Joy, has treated me like her own daughter. She picks me up for school 3 days a week on the mornings my dad has to leave early, packs me lunches, takes me to doctor’s appointments, talks to me about the birds and the bees, etc. Recently I told her that I appreciate it, and she replied, “There’s no reason to thank me. As far as friends go, your mom was my soul mate. And although I decided to never have kids, I have one, you. I love you like my own daughter.” MMT

Today, my little sister has Down Syndrome and she loves listening to the band Train. I took her to their concert tonight for her birthday. We had general admission floor tickets, so we intended to get there early to secure a spot at the front, but we hit traffic and ended up getting there just a few minutes before Train came on stage. So we started off standing in the back. But as my sister sang every word perfectly to their songs, people noticed her and insisted that she move forward in front of them. This happened about ten times. We made it all the way to the front. And then, during the encore, the lead singer noticed my sister and invited her on stage to help sing one of the last songs. She later told me, “Thank you sis! Tonight was the best night of my life!” MMT

Today, I received a used book in the mail (an old novel from my favorite author) that I bought from a third party Amazon affiliated reseller last week. The description of the book’s condition said, “Name written on first page, otherwise in great shape.” But when I opened the book, the name written on the first page is the author’s signature. MMT

Today, after drinking several beers at a bar downtown for my friend’s birthday party, I walked down the road to the bus stop and waited. I was too tight on cash to get a taxi, but I could afford a bus fare. While I was waiting at the bus stop, a taxi pulled up to see if I wanted a ride. It turned out to be a taxi driver who’s given me a ride several times before over the years. I said, “No thanks, I’m tight on money right now and I don’t have enough cash on me.” “Don’t worry about it, jump in,” he said. “You’re a regular, and you’ve tipped me well over the years. I’m getting off my shift now anyway, and I’m heading your way.” He dropped me off at my home free of charge, and even refused a small tip. He smiled and said, “Tonight I’m giving you the tip.” MMT

Today, I cut open my hand badly. This afternoon I went to change the bandage and, to my surprise, I fainted when the blood wouldn’t stop. My best friend caught me mid-fall. I woke up warm and comfortable in her arms while she quietly talked to me. She was saying, “I’m with you, old friend.” She had bandaged my hand for me and held me until I regained consciousness, then made me a doctor’s appointment, drove me there, and stayed by my side through it. Her friendship MMT.

Today, it’s been ten years since my controlling, abusive ex-fiancé sold my favorite guitar which cost me $900 and took me ages to save for. He sold it on the day I dumped him. When I went to claim my things, he was proud that he had sold it to a pawn shop. Luckily, I managed to track down the guy that bought it from the pawn shop. The guy was really sweet, and gave it back to me for free, on the condition that I accompany him on his front porch for an hour and play guitar with him. He grabbed a second guitar and we ended up sitting there on his porch for the rest of the afternoon playing music, talking, and smiling. He’s been my husband for nine years now. MMT

Today, it’s been a couple weeks since I got unexpectedly laid off two days before Christmas. Unemployment only pays me about 20% of what I've been making for the last five years. I had to move from a 1,500 sq ft apartment into a 400 sq ft studio to make ends meet. I’ve been really stressed out for many reasons, but mainly because my fiancé comes from a pretty wealthy family. I sometimes worry I don’t financially live up to her expectations. Tonight, she came to see me when she got off work. We were sitting on the couch and I asked her if she was comfortable. She immediately snuggled her head into my chest and said, “This, right here, always feels like home.” MMT

Today, it’s been exactly six months since I took on the responsibility of caring for my 17-year-old severely autistic brother. He rarely talks and prefers to be alone. Today while I served him his favorite meal for dinner, he gave me a huge hug out of the blue and said, “Thank you my beautiful big sister!” His gesture made me cry from joy and MMT.

Today, on my birthday, on my last delivery of the night, I delivered a pizza to one of our regular customers. When he opened the door, he threw confetti, grabbed the pizzas, and said, “Jason, you’ve been delivering my pizzas for two years now and they’re always hot and delicious! Your co-worker told me I would be your final delivery this evening, because you’re taking the rest of the night off to celebrate your birthday. Happy birthday! Have some fun on me this evening.” And then he handed me a $100 tip. MMT

Today, four months after my husband had a stroke that doctors said would likely prevent him from being able to speak for the rest of his life, my husband started speaking in his sleep during an afternoon nap. He sounded perfect. I listened for a few seconds and then shook him to wake him up. He woke up and said, “Oh, you scared me!” By the stretch of a miracle, he suddenly regained the motor skills necessary to speak. MMT

Today, at 3AM I had a heart attack and was pronounced dead in the hospital for over 30 seconds while doctors were trying to revive me. Once they did, I was rushed into emergency surgery to unclog one of my arteries. I don’t remember much. The whole thing seems like a dream. But now I’m sitting here in my hospital bed tonight with my iPad – able to write, able to move, able to breathe, and wondering how I got lucky enough to get another shot at life. MMT
