Today, I read about Obama protestors marching down public streets carrying loaded fire-arms. These protestors were not arrested. But gay and lesbian protestors elsewhere in this country have been harassed and arrested for simply holding hands and marching in solidarity. MMT

Today, my 4 year old boy asked me to play toy dinosaurs with him, he looked shocked when I said "yes." It made me realize that he's come to expect a "no" from me. MMT

Today, my best friend of 6 years was put in the hospital for attempting suicide. She's always listened to my stupid, petty problems and asked me how I was feeling. But I never ever asked her how she was feeling because she always seemed so happy. MMT

Today, when I woke up, you were the first person I talked to. Then again tonight, just after supper, you were the last. And I don’t know if there is a heaven. But I miss you and I hope you can hear me. MMT

Today, when he got home from work, he told me he got an A on his final exam in Accounting, found a $50 bill in the back of a taxi cab, and that his new boss treated him out to an expensive lunch. Then he said, “But your smile just made my day.” MMT

Today, my 16 year old son told me, “I’m not afraid of death. I’m afraid of life and what it means if I die before I achieve my dreams.” MMT

Today, on my daughter’s 18th birthday, she enlisted in the Army. When she was younger I used to tell her that her smile could stop wars, but I never thought she’d attempt to test my theory. MMT

Today, after getting in a huge argument with my wife over something silly, I was reminded of the fact that love is not a fairytale. It's hard work. But it's worth it. MMT

Today, I broke down in front of my dad, frustrated with recently coming out to my family. I began to cry and yelled, "I'm sorry I'm gay!" He grabbed my tear-filled face and said sternly, "Don't ever apologize for who you are. Who you are is who I love. And who you are is beautiful." MMT

Today, my dad told me and my little sister that we might lose our house. I was sad, angry, worried and stressed. My 14 yr old sister asked me whats wrong. When I told her, she said, "It's just a house. I don't care where we live, as long as we're together." MMT

Today, I found out that the woman who I thought was a young mom of the 2 twin boys I have in my 5th grade math class is actually their 24-year-old half sister. Apparently, her parents got divorced and her mom had the twins with another man. Then 4 years ago, her mom and the father of the twins died in a car wreck. The 24-year-old daughter, who was 20 at the time, took over as their legal guardian and has been raising them ever since. MMT

Today, I returned home after being stationed in Iraq for 9 months. While I was still in uniform, I went into an ice cream shop near the airport to get a milkshake. The girl behind the counter handed me my shake and said, “It’s on me.” “Thanks, you didn’t have to do that,” I said. “Neither did you,” she replied. MMT

Today, I realized it wasn't the sex that proved to me she was special. It was the first time she slept with me without having sex that I knew she would be the one. MMT

Today, after I smiled at my best friend she looked up at me and said, “I've never told you this before, but when you look into my eyes and smile, I get the best feeling in the world. It's like nothing else matters. And I hold these moments in the back of my mind and reflect on them when I’m having a bad day.” MMT

Today, my 6-year-old son and I were walking down the sidewalk of a busy city street when it began pouring rain. I didn't have an umbrella so I used my purse to try to shelter my son’s head from the rain. A minute later at a crosswalk, a young man tossed his umbrella out his car window to me, smiled, and drove off. MMT

Today, my dad is the best dad I could ask for. He’s a loving husband to my mom (always making her laugh), he’s been to every one of my soccer games since I was 5 (I’m 17 now), and he provides for our family as a construction foreman. This morning when I was searching through my dad’s toolbox for a pliers, I found a dirty folded up paper at the bottom. It was an old journal entry in my dad’s handwriting dated exactly one month before the day I was born. It reads, “I am eighteen years old, an alcoholic who is failing out of college, a past cutter, and a child abuse victim with a criminal record of auto theft. And next month, ‘teen father’ will be added to the list. But, I swear I will make things right for my little girl. I will be the dad I never had.” And I don’t know how he did it, but he did it. MMT

Today, my coworkers laughed at me when I told them my dream was to own my own bakery. When I told my father what happened, he said, “I've known a few people who went after their dreams. One thing they all had in common was they got laughed at in the process.” MMT

Today, marks a full year since she passed. And she's still the first thing I think of when I wake up and the last thing I think of before falling asleep. MMT

Today when I read the news about the healthcare debate, I thought of my dad, who died of colon cancer at 86. When the doctor told him he could have 6 to 8 more weeks with chemo and radiation, my dad was horrified. "Spend Medicare money on me when there are kids without health insurance? I'm 86!" MMT

Today at the Atlanta airport, as I walked off a plane dressed in my Army uniform, a little girl grabbed my hand and asked me if I would be going back overseas soon. I told her I would be in 6 weeks. She smiled and said, “Can you please tell my daddy that I love him. My mommy told me he’s never coming home from over there.” MMT

Today, I was walking in Ocean Beach when I saw what I thought was a homeless man sitting on a curb with a cardboard sign. As I walked by he said, “Give me a smile and I’ll give you some money.” I grinned ear to ear and he gave me a handful of change. His cardboard sign said, “Your smile makes my day.” MMT

Today in the McDonalds line, a mother and her young son ordered their food. The boy then said, "And I want ice-cream!" She scolded him and said, "You need to eat real food! No ice-cream until you eat your Big Mac!" MMT

Today, I kissed a girl for the first time. I am a girl and it felt right. MMT

Today, I watched three young children meet for the first time on a playground in a local park. They all immediately acted like best friends, playing and laughing hysterically. They made me smile, and then I began to wonder why adults lack the ability to accept each other so easily. MMT

Today, a deaf-mute child I have been caring for 5 days a week for the last 4 years looked up at me this afternoon after I fed him his favorite lunch and spoke aloud to me for the first time. He said, “Thank you, Monica. I love you.” MMT

Today at 5AM, I asked an elderly man in the city where the nearest train stop was. He walked me to it and then waited next to me for 15 minutes. When the train finally arrived, he smiled and said, "Be safe out there, miss." and then walked away without boarding the train. MMT

Today, I tucked my fiancé into bed. And as she fell asleep I started to sing a lullaby my grandmother used to sing to me. It was the first time I had ever sung it to anyone. After a moment, she looked up at me smiling, with tears in her eyes. Her grandmother used to sing the same exact lullaby to her. MMT

Today, I was talking to my 10 year old next door neighbor. Then I asked her about something she told me yesterday. She looked shocked, smiled, and asked, "You were listening?" I remembered then that her parents are divorced, and her mother never seems to be around. MMT

Today, I yelled at my 14 year old son when I caught him on the phone at 3AM. But then at 7AM I got a phone call from his friend’s mother who and said, “Thank you for raising a hero. My baby was considering suicide last night. I found the suicide note this morning and he confessed his intentions. But your son talked him out of it over the phone last night.” MMT

Today marks my 10th anniversary as a human trafficking officer. I’ve spent the last decade of my life saving women and children from slavery. And what continues to bother me the most isn’t the abundant supply of ‘people for sale’ in this world, it’s the overwhelming DEMAND for these people. MMT

Today, my old car broke down at a busy intersection. I had to push it across two lanes of traffic. The only person that bothered to help me was homeless man begging for change on the corner. MMT

Today, after being insulted by a guy I work with, I walked out of the office with a heavy heart only to find a note card on my car’s windshield. It was from my ex-boyfriend of 2 years who is simply my best friend now. It said, "Would it be okay if I sorta had a little crush on you forever?" MMT

Today, I relived one of our arguments in my head. This time I just said, "I support you if this is what you really need to do right now." Then I thought about all of the arguments where I could have said this and realized it's what I should have said all along. Man, I miss you like crazy. MMT

Today, after work, I got to my car and found a giant dent in my rear bumper. The jerk who did this did not leave a note. Apparently, he was in such a haste to flee the scene of the crime that he didn’t even realize his license plate fell off of his car. What goes around comes around. MMT

Today, I was a crying at a park over an argument I had with a friend. As I was leaving, a little girl ran up to me. Grinning widely, she said, "You looked sad so my mom said I should give you these." Then she pulled out hand-picked flowers from behind her back and gave me a hug. MMT

Today, he tried to call me again, and as usual, I cried. I know I can't let him back into my life because I’ve tried so many times before, and the physical and mental abuse just gets worse. But I know I'll still think of him everyday. Because I do miss my dad. MMT

Today, nearly a full month after my husband died in a car accident, I started working again. I went into my home office, opened my work laptop and found a sticky note from my husband stuck to the screen. It was dated the day he died, and it read, “You look beautiful today, honey. Let’s make today a good one!” MMT
