Today, I got lost in Manhattan. As I stood on the sidewalk trying to get someone’s attention for a little assistance, 25+ well dressed business folks blazed by me, purposely avoiding eye contact. Finally a teenager with spiked green hair and a pierced lip stopped, smiled and gave me perfect directions. MMT

Today, I felt lucky to witness the humble, elegant, peaceful death of my partner's 91 year old grandfather. The nurse said, "Everyone dies the way they live." MMT

Today, after a 72 hour shift at the fire station, a woman ran up to me at the grocery store and gave me a hug. When I tensed up, she realized I didn’t recognize her. She let go with tears of joy in her eyes and the most sincere smile and said, “On 9-11-2001, you carried me out of the World Trade Center.” MMT

Today at the diner where I work, an elderly couple came in for the 4th time this week and requested my table. I asked them what kept them coming back. They told me that I reminded them of their granddaughter who passed away 6 years ago. Then they told me her name. She was my best friend at the time. MMT

Today, my father told me, "Just go for it and give it a try! You don't have to be a professional to build a successful product. Amateurs started Google and Apple. Professionals built the Titanic." MMT

Today, I asked my 6 year old son what he wants to be when he grows up. He said, "Mommy, all I want to be is happy." MMT

Today, my sister told me a student of hers turned eight years old on Friday. When I realized he was born on September 11, 2001, I said, "How horrible for his family." My sister explained that his grandfather worked at the Pentagon and skipped work that day upon learning his daughter was in labor. MMT

Today, I was looking out my window to the street down below. A teenage boy was walking by when suddenly my neighbor's recycle bin blew over in the wind. In an empty street, with no one to impress, that boy stopped and chased down flying newspapers until they were all back in the bin. MMT

Today, I stuck my hand into my coat pocket and found a 5 dollar bill wrapped around a note. The note read, "You have just been reverse-pick-pocketed. Enjoy the 5 dollars, and know that it was forcibly received by your pocket. Take that, society!" MMT

Today, my teacher told me to "make a good day." I replied, "Don't you mean 'have a good day?'" He smiled and said, "No, you can't have a good day, you need to make it a good day." MMT

Today, my grandfather gazed over at my grandmother and said to me, “You know, we’ve been together so long, and I know her so well, that when I look at her, I don’t even see what’s on the outside anymore. I could be blind and see the woman I love.” MMT

Today, simply because I was in the right place at the right time, I saved a little boy from drowning in the ocean. MMT

Today, I met a man at Venice Beach wearing a t-shirt that said, "The Smilemaker." All he did for the duration I watched him was walk back and forth telling jokes, making funny faces, and doing whatever it took to make complete strangers laugh. And he wasn’t even asking for tips. He made me smile. MMT

Today, I got a phone call from my grandfather. He's been in a coma for almost a year. Last week the doctors told my family he may never wake up. MMT

Today, a blind stranger told me he could hear the song in my smile. MMT

Today, I was on a public transit bus when a Catholic nun boarded the bus and sat right next to a Muslim. I listened to them speak peacefully about their own God and beliefs for nearly 30 minutes until I reached my stop. MMT

Today I told my little brother to be careful. "The higher you climb, the farther you will fall," I said. He smiled and replied, "No. The higher the fall, the higher the bounce." MMT

Today, on the day you passed away, I asked for a sign that you know how much I love you and that your spirit is ok wherever you are. As I was sewing tonight, I clipped 4 threads from a seam and they fell into the shape of your initials. MMT

Today, when she woke up from an eleven month coma, she kissed me and said, “Thank you for being here, and telling me those beautiful stories, and never giving up on me... And yes, I will marry you.” MMT

Today, after being insulted by a guy I work with, I walked out of the office with a heavy heart only to find a note card on my car’s windshield. It was from my ex-boyfriend of 2 years who is simply my best friend now. It said, "Would it be okay if I sorta had a little crush on you forever?" MMT

Today, as I leaned in to kiss my best friend since elementary school on the cheek, she turned her head towards me at the last second and our lips connected. My heart skipped a beat. MMT

Today, I was sitting on my back porch all day BBQing steaks, drinking beer, kissing my wife, and playing with my 3 and 5 year old boys. Yesterday I finished my third and final tour of duty with the 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment in Iraq. It feels great to be home. MMT

Today, I was looking at a house to buy when I saw the owner outside staring at me with a distasteful expression on his face. I scrambled to put on a long sleeve shirt to hide my tattoos. But when I walked toward him and extended my hand, he didn't extend his. He said he was legally blind, and smiled. MMT

Today, as I helped my son pack for his first deployment to Afghanistan, I hid notes that say, “I love you!” in the pockets of all of his clothes. I just hope the notes motivate him to return home safely. MMT

Today, my doctor called to check in with me six weeks after my neurosurgery. He asked if I was getting around okay. He was shocked to find out that I've been back at the gym, and have already set the date for my first competition. He then confessed that he originally thought I may never run again. MMT

Today, I was talking to my grandmother about love. I asked her, "How do you know when you truly love someone?" She paused for a moment and replied, "When you lose them." MMT

Today, my Calculus teacher told me about how he destroyed his iPhone. He jumped into a pool while his phone was still on him to save his two year old daughter from drowning. He saved her life, yet he talked about it as if it was completely normal. MMT

Today I got on a bus with my grandfather. It was full with only one seat left. I told my grandfather to take it, which he refused to do, insisting I take it. After a bit I gave in and took the seat. In jest, I said "Your legs are older than mine!" "Yes," he said, "But yours have further to go." MMT

Today I was at the mall with friend and I noticed that she kept on dropping quarters in random places. When I asked her why she was doing this she simply said, "I love seeing the reactions of people who find a quarter on the ground. They're always so happy." My friends kindness MMT.

Today, my boyfriend fell asleep in my arms, snoring just a little. It's crazy how happy it made me to hear him snore, sleeping peacefully. The room was all quiet, and there we lay. Him, snoring, and I, realizing just how much I love him. And that I’d rather be nowhere else. MMT

Today, I was sitting on my front porch watching the neighbor's kid have the time of his life with nothing more than a wooden stick and his imagination. MMT

Today, I was smiling to myself as I was walking home and enjoying the fresh air. Some random stranger smiled back at me and said, “Nice to see you!” I quickly replied, “I’m sorry. Do we know each other?” “No,” she replied. “I just enjoy your smile.” MMT

Today, I married the man of my dreams. I left for college at 18 and looked for him there. Nothing. I moved to a new city and looked for him there. Nothing. Then last fall I returned home for Thanksgiving. My brother's best friend, whom I grew up with, joined us for dinner. And I found him. MMT

Today, I was at the beach watching a little girl chase her father's remote controlled car around in circles. She kept jumping forward and falling on her knees in an effort to catch the car as it skidded by. She did this 31 times and failed. But on attempt #32, she caught the car. MMT

Today, while I was stuck in a traffic jam caused by a drawbridge opening for a large sailboat to pass, two thirty-something women jumped out of the car in front of me, cranked up their car stereo, and danced in the street until the drawbridge came back down. MMT

Today, I was confronted with the fact that I have learned more, changed more, and grown more from the feedback of my toughest critics, than from anyone else I have ever known. MMT

Today, after deciding to wear my comfy flannel shirt out to a bar while all my girlfriends got dressed up, I met a boy who told me "anything worn in confidence is beautiful." MMT

Today, at the food court in the mall, a beautiful girl about my age came up to me and hugged me with tears in her eyes. Once she calmed down, I realized that I had pulled her out of a bathtub a month earlier, her wrists covered in slashes. I am an EMT, and her gesture of appreciation MMT.

Today, after I gave up a decade long search last year, he knocked on my door and said, “I’m your biological, fraternal, twin brother.” MMT

Today, on my daughter’s 30th birthday, the whole family got together to celebrate. As we laughed and reminisced about old times, my wife said it was cute that my daughter used to call me her hero when she was a kid. To which my daughter replied, “He still is my hero.” MMT

Today, after stressing out and wondering if I'm in the right profession, a 2nd grader came up to me and gave me a hug. When I asked, "What was that for?" she smiled and said, "Just 'cause I love you." She reminded me that the stress is worth it. MMT

Today, it was the way she slept with me without having sex that made me realize she was the one. MMT

Today, my 9-year-old baby brother curiously looked at the acronym 'WTF' and said, "I know what that means! 'Wow, That's Funny!' Right?" MMT

Today I am in London taking a semester of classes abroad. My twin brother is in the Marines serving his first tour of duty in Iraq. This evening we were both outside talking to each other on the phone. And just when I said, “You feel like a world away,” we both saw the same shooting star. MMT

Today, he asked me if I would take a road trip with him just to get out of town and see something new. I said, “Yes.” I asked him where he wanted to go. He said, “It doesn’t matter to me, as long as you’re riding shotgun.” MMT

Today, I was at the grocery store with my 5-year-old son and my mom. We were in the bakery isle looking at sweets when I told my son he could take anything he wanted home with him. He grabbed my mom's hand and in the most serious voice said, "Can I bring grandma home? Please!" Grandma has been smiling ever since. MMT

Today, my friend told me she didn't mind being legally blind, with only 12% of her vision. She said, "After it rains there's usually a dew left on the grass. And because of the way my eyes refract the light, I see rainbows in the grass." MMT

Today, I gave a persuasive speech against prenatal screenings and abortions based on disabilities. A classmate with Asperger syndrome (a form of autism) came up to me and said, "I just want to let you know that I really appreciate people like you who appreciate people like me." MMT

Today, I met a five-year-old on the summit of a 14,000 foot hike. MMT

Today, I was at the airport waiting for my sister when I noticed a young, white couple waiting and looking very nervous and worried. Then a well dressed woman walked past security and toward them holding an Asian baby. Both of their faces lit up instantly. And the husband said, “That’s our new baby girl!” MMT

Today, my car broke down and I didn’t have any cash on me for a cab. As I fumbled with my cell, trying to call a friend, a man walked up and handed me $20. He said, “Here’s some money for a cab.” I thanked him and asked for his address so I could pay him back. He said, “Just pay it forward.” MMT

Today, in the cutest voice, my 8-year-old daughter asked me to start recycling. I chuckled and asked, “Why?” She replied, “So you can help me save the planet.” I chuckled again and asked, “And why do you want to save the planet?” “Because that’s where I keep all my stuff,” she said. MMT

Today, a hospice nurse was caring for my mother, who doctors say only has 2-3 days to live. I asked her how she could possibly do such a difficult job. She simply said, "Some nurses help people live, others help them find their wings." MMT

Today, at the age of 70, my grandfather graduated from college with a bachelor’s degree in business studies. He’s been a successful business owner most of his life, but he told me he earned his degree to fulfill a promise he made to his mother before she lost her battle with cancer 50 years ago. MMT

Today, a complete stranger outside a local coffee shop was holding a sign that said, "Free Hugs." I hesitated at first, but then I decided to give her a hug. Truthfully, it felt great! MMT

Today she got married. Four years ago her breast cancer went into remission. Six years ago her doctors gave her eighteen months to live. MMT

Today, I found out that my best (guy) friend was critically injured in Afghanistan during his first week of deployment. He had to have his left leg amputated. In the 10 years we’ve been friends, I’ve never had the courage to tell him how much I love him. I'm visiting him next week. And I intend to tell him. MMT

Today, I skipped school to visit my grandfather in the hospital. He is battling cancer. My mom warned me that he may not recognize me due to his medication. When I walked in to say hi, his blue eyes lit up as a he said, "BB!" That’s what he used to call me when I was a little kid. MMT

Today, the last thing I heard before going under general anesthesia for surgery was the nurse saying, "Uh-oh!" MMT

Today, I met an 85 year old woman who lives at the other end of my neighborhood. I complained about how bumpy and pot hole covered our roads are. She said, "Well I don't know, I think the roads are nice. When I was a little girl, these roads were all dirt roads." MMT

Today, the homeless man who used to sleep near my condo showed up at my door wearing the business suit I gave him nearly 10 years ago. He said, “I have a home, a job, and a family now. 10 years ago I wore this business suit to all my job interviews. Thank you.” MMT

Yesterday, I discharged a woman in her 70's who just came out of surgery. She told me she wasn't afraid of death anymore. I asked why not. She asked me if I remembered the moment of my birth. When I replied "no," she said "It's the same way with death, I won't remember it." MMT

Today, I realized my wallet was abnormally thick. I looked inside it and found about 50 hilarious and heartfelt post-it notes of love and appreciation from my best friend. She must have slipped them in there when I left my wallet at her house last night. MMT

Today, after watching my daughter ride her bike without training wheels for the first time, I decided to quit smoking. I don't ever want to miss one of those moments. MMT

Today, after spending the last 6 years trying to get here, I finally arrived and realized that the most rewarding part of reaching my desired destination was the journey itself. MMT

Today, my son and I were in a car accident. I came out of it with just a cut over my eye, but my son fell into a coma. Today, due to recent storm damage to our barn, my family had to put our biggest horse, weighing 1300 lbs, into the same stall as our pony, who is the size of a Labrador. The 2 get along great. As I watched this unique friendship grow, I wondered why humans have such difficulty looking past petty differences. MMT

Today, I watched as 3 giddy tourists jumped around, dancing and singing for 15 minutes with a live Mickey Mouse character at Disney World. These tourists were easily 70 years old. MMT

Today, I turned 21. I met a guy who asked me if it was the best day of my life. I said it was and he said, "Me too!" When I asked why, he said, "Because yesterday is the past and tomorrow isn't guaranteed, that's why this very moment is the best moment of my life." MMT

Today, I visited my grandpa at his retirement home. At 87, he always seems so happy. This morning I asked him, “How come I never hear you complain about your age like everyone else here?” He replied, “I have no complaints about growing old. Many folks are not fortunate enough to have the opportunity." MMT

Today marks the 2nd anniversary of my kidney disease surgery - a disease that nearly took my life. It wasn't until the doctor told me I was dying that I realized how much I had taken for granted. And now that I’ve been given a 2nd chance, I spend my time smiling, because now know life’s too short not to. MMT

She told me about the day she met my grandpa, the setting of their first kiss, their marriage, the birth of my dad, etc. And at some point I asked her, “So what’s your favorite moment?” She smiled and replied, “My favorite moment hasn't happened yet.” MMT

Today, my boyfriend told me, "You can't live your life to the fullest if you’re not saying the things you want to say." So I told him, for the first time, that I loved him. He said, “I love you too.” MMT

Today, as he rested peacefully in his hospice bed, my grandfather turned to my grandmother, smiled from ear to ear and said, “Honey, growing old with you has been a privilege.” MMT

Today, at a concert in Denver, I saw a husband and wife in their late-70's dancing harder and singing louder than all their younger counterparts. When I told them how great it was that they were still out there partying, the woman just looked at me and said, "Honey... Do it till ya can't do it!" MMT

Today, the old star quarterback from our high school’s football team is an office clerk at a successful biomedical company. The nerdy kid who he always used to pick on – who I regularly stood up for and defended – co-owns the company with me. MMT

Today, I saw a blind tourist at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C.. Another tourist walked over to the blind man and said, "Do you want to know what it looks like?" and then explained to him in vivid detail exactly what the memorial looks like. MMT

Today, I returned home after being stationed in Iraq for 10 months and held my 1 month old son for the very first time. MMT

Today, I was at a Cubs game and heard commotion in the outfield. I then noticed that the outfielder had thrown a ball up to a fully dressed Marine in the stands. No one else went for the ball; instead they gave the Marine a standing ovation. It was one of the most touching things I have seen. MMT

Today was my 72nd birthday. My wife of 46 years, Sara, kissed me and said, “If I could do it all over, I wouldn’t change a thing.” MMT

Today I was giving campus tours and had a student in a wheel chair in the group. We talked all day and he never stopped smiling. I found out that he had a scholarship to play basketball before his accident left him paralyzed. He told me, "It didn't ruin my life, it just changed my circumstances." MMT

Today, a close friend of mine passed away at the age of 25. And while I've spent most of the day crying, I’ve spent the last 3 hours thinking about the fact that our lives are sometimes much shorter than we expect them to be - that each moment is a gift. Obvious thoughts that never really sunk in until now. MMT

Today my father told me, "Stop looking for somewhere peaceful. Find it in yourself and carry it wherever you go." MMT

Today, I took a pay cut so I could start spending more time with my 5 year old son. When I got home early, he ran into my arms with the brightest smile I've ever seen. MMT

Today, I realized it wasn't the sex that proved to me she was special. It was the first time she slept with me without having sex that I knew she would be the one. MMT

Today, when I tapped the side of my wheelchair and told my husband, “You’re the only reason I want to be free from this contraption,” he kissed me on my forehead and said, “Honey, I don’t even see that thing.” MMT

Today, I was at the beach and a young boy on the boardwalk above started squawking at me like a bird. I caught myself getting annoyed, so I joined in and gave him a friendly squawk back. He found this quite entertaining, so we both continued to be silly. I think it made his day... it certainly made mine. MMT

Today, I tucked my fiancé into bed. And as she fell asleep I started to sing a lullaby my grandmother used to sing to me. It was the first time I had ever sung it to anyone. After a moment, she looked up at me smiling, with tears in her eyes. Her grandmother used to sing the same exact lullaby to her. MMT

Today, I was a crying at a park over an argument I had with a friend. As I was leaving, a little girl ran up to me. Grinning widely, she said, "You looked sad so my mom said I should give you these." Then she pulled out hand-picked flowers from behind her back and gave me a hug. MMT
