Today, I returned home after being stationed in Iraq for 9 months. While I was still in uniform, I went into an ice cream shop near the airport to get a milkshake. The girl behind the counter handed me my shake and said, “It’s on me.” “Thanks, you didn’t have to do that,” I said. “Neither did you,” she replied. MMT

Today, I was working in a coffee shop when 2 gay men walked in holding hands. As you might expect, heads started turning. Then a young girl at the table next to me asked her mom why 2 men were holding hands. Her mom replied, "Because they love each other." MMT

Today, I met a cute white guy at a local bar. In conversation he mentioned that he supports same sex marriages. I politely asked him if he was gay. He chuckled and said, "My mom supported the Civil Rights Movement. Do I look black to you?" MMT

Today, I realized that some of the most interesting and insightful people in my life are the ones who made me think, "What a weirdo…" when I first met them. MMT

Today, a complete stranger on a busy city street tapped me on the shoulder and asked, "What if you were never born? Would the world be any different?" MMT

Today marks 6 years since I was discharged from a mental hospital after suffering from severe depression. I've since graduated from college, started a successful marketing firm, and am the proud father of a beautiful baby boy. MMT

Today, my 12 year old son said, “I hate school, but I love to read and learn.” I didn’t have the guts to tell him that I couldn’t agree more. MMT

Today at 5AM, I asked an elderly man in the city where the nearest train stop was. He walked me to it and then waited next to me for 15 minutes. When the train finally arrived, he smiled and said, "Be safe out there, miss." and then walked away without boarding the train. MMT

Today, I kissed my dad on the forehead as he passed away in a small hospital bed. About 5 seconds after he passed, I realized it was the first time I had given him a kiss since I was a little boy. MMT

Today, we were told by our family doctor that my dad only has a month left to live. We cried, laughed and cried some more together. Tonight, my dad asked me if he could spend the first night in my new condo with me. I smiled and said, “Of course.” The kicker… I don't move in for another 2 months. MMT

Today, I was thinking about the last year of my life and the fact that almost exactly a year ago I decided to commit suicide. But a close friend happened to stop by randomly at that exact moment and unintentionally convinced me to give life another chance. I am now happier than I have ever been. MMT

Today, I was stuck in traffic on the way home from work. I was extremely annoyed with the situation until I drove past the cause of the delay. Two totaled cars had smashed against the median, with several ambulances and firefighters surrounding the wreckage. MMT

Today in downtown Atlanta, I saw a homeless man help a young mother carry her baby’s stroller up a long flight of stairs. MMT

Today I took my daughter to the park and a woman warned me that there was a "bum" sleeping on a picnic table by the swings. I stayed away. Shortly after, 2 teenage boys came by and the woman offered the same warning. One of the boys said, "Oh, that's Elmer. I know him. He's homeless. He's my friend." MMT

Today, my best friend confronted me with the fact that I hesitated when I had the opportunity 2 years ago, and that I have now spent the last 2 years obsessing over what could have been. MMT

Today, on my birthday, I received an envelope in the mail containing my wallet that I lost last week. All of my money and credit cards were still inside, and on my driver's license next to my address and birthday was a post-it note that said, "Happy Birthday!" There was no return address. MMT

Today, I walked into a small coffee shop in downtown Dallas around lunchtime and politely asked, "May I please have a Venti Soy Latte?" The guy behind the counter smiled and prepared my latte for me. As I pulled out my money, he said, "The latte is on me. You're the first person all day to say 'please.'" MMT

Today, I accidently left my wallet on the bar at a busy restaurant in New York City. When I went back to get it 30 minutes later, it was untouched in the same place I left it. MMT

Today, I came out to my dad. And despite my greatest fear over the last 8 years, he still loves me. MMT

Today at a rock concert, I saw a tall, mean-looking security bouncer on my way into the mosh pit. When I turned back around 20 minutes later, he was standing next to my mom and holding my 11-year-old brother on his shoulders just so my brother could see the stage. MMT

Today, I ran into a guy I used to tease and pick on in high school. I ran into him at a job interview. He was the interviewer. MMT

Today, I visited my grandpa at his retirement home. At 87, he always seems so happy. This morning I asked him, “How come I never hear you complain about your age like everyone else here?” He replied, “I have no complaints about growing old. Many folks are not fortunate enough to have the opportunity." MMT

Today, I watched my beautiful little girl running though sprinklers in the backyard. As she laughed and screamed I thought that nothing in the world could make me happier. Six years ago I seriously considered having an abortion. MMT

Today, I told my mom that I feel like I'm failng with my alcoholism counseling and that I want to quit. Then she said my 8 year old brother told her, "I really like the new Elliot so much better." MMT

Today, as I watched my 3-year-old daughter play with her friends, I realized the world is still a beautiful place. MMT

Today, while I was riding the train home from NYC, I was reading the entries on this site. After awhile, I glanced up and looked at all the unique people sitting around me, and I began wondering how many of them had gone through situations similar to the ones listed here. I know everyone has a story to tell. MMT

Today, and every weekday at 9AM for the last 4 years, I have walked past the same 3 street bums on my way to work. One of them is always strumming a guitar and the other 2 are always singing. And they all have huge smiles on their faces. Sometimes their smiles are the only smiles I see all day. MMT

Today, I found out that an old classmate who dropped out of high school and got her GED is now a law student at UC Berkeley. My friends and I were so sure she would never amount to anything. MMT

Today, a man came into the convenient store where I work and bought cigarettes from me. He was wearing a white doctor's lab jacket and a stethoscope around his neck. MMT
