Today, my dad was showing me all of the medals he received from his twenty years of service in the Marine Corps. I asked him, "Which medal is the most important to you?” To which he replied, "I have never received any medal more important to me than you and your mother.” MMT

Today, I returned home after being stationed in Iraq for 9 months. While I was still in uniform, I went into an ice cream shop near the airport to get a milkshake. The girl behind the counter handed me my shake and said, “It’s on me.” “Thanks, you didn’t have to do that,” I said. “Neither did you,” she replied. MMT

Today, I was sitting on my back porch all day BBQing steaks, drinking beer, kissing my wife, and playing with my 3 and 5 year old boys. Yesterday I finished my third and final tour of duty with the 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment in Iraq. It feels great to be home. MMT

Today, I was at a Cubs game and heard commotion in the outfield. I then noticed that the outfielder had thrown a ball up to a fully dressed Marine in the stands. No one else went for the ball; instead they gave the Marine a standing ovation. It was one of the most touching things I have seen. MMT

Today, as my grandfather (a military doctor, war hero, and successful business owner) rested in his hospice bed, I asked him what his greatest life accomplishment was. He turned around, grabbed my grandmother’s hand, looked her in the eyes, and said, “Growing old with you.” MMT

Today, I fell in love with the same person twice… once when she greeted me and once when she said goodbye. After four years my heart continues to jump in this exact pattern, without fail, every time. I can't define ‘love’ with words, but whenever I see her, hear her, or think of her, I feel what love is. MMT

Today, in the airport, I saw a young hippie walking one way and an elderly gentleman in a wheelchair rolling the other. As they passed each other, the hippie turned around, looked at the elderly man, shook his hand and said, "Thank you." The elderly man was wearing an Army Veteran cap. MMT

Today my father told me, "Stop looking for somewhere peaceful. Find it in yourself and carry it wherever you go." MMT

Today, I was sitting on a bench in the French Quarter watching bubbles float by in the breeze that a little girl down the block was blowing. At one point, an elderly man who was having trouble walking stopped in the middle of the sidewalk to pop a bubble with the end of his cane. MMT

Today I am employed as a mail sorter for a branch of the US Military. A large envelope addressed to a top ranking officer arrived today. Under the recipient’s address, in big capital letters, the sender wrote, “I WANT MY FRIEND BACK!” MMT
