Today, I returned home after being stationed in Iraq for 9 months. While I was still in uniform, I went into an ice cream shop near the airport to get a milkshake. The girl behind the counter handed me my shake and said, “It’s on me.” “Thanks, you didn’t have to do that,” I said. “Neither did you,” she replied. MMT

Today, I interviewed a woman who is terminally ill. "So," I tried to delicately ask, "What is it like to wake up every morning and know that you are dying?" "Well," she responded, "What is it like to wake up every morning and pretend that you are not?" MMT

Today I was giving campus tours and had a student in a wheel chair in the group. We talked all day and he never stopped smiling. I found out that he had a scholarship to play basketball before his accident left him paralyzed. He told me, "It didn't ruin my life, it just changed my circumstances." MMT

Today, I was sitting on my front porch watching the neighbor's kid have the time of his life with nothing more than a wooden stick and his imagination. MMT

Today, after spending every waking minute with her for 8 straight days, I knew I had to tell her just 1 thing. So just before she fell asleep, I whispered it in her ear. She smiled and said, "When I'm 75 and I think about what it was like to be young, I hope I can remember this very moment." MMT

Today, at work, a woman and her young daughter came to my register. The girl was hugging her mother's leg and being very well behaved. She kept saying, “I love you mommy.” Suddenly, her mom jerked her leg and said, "Get off!" The young girl walked 15 feet behind her mother the whole way to their car. MMT

Today, I was working in a coffee shop when 2 gay men walked in holding hands. As you might expect, heads started turning. Then a young girl at the table next to me asked her mom why 2 men were holding hands. Her mom replied, "Because they love each other." MMT

Today, I passed two homeless men in a shouting match in my hometown of Baltimore. I thought it was just a crazy homeless person argument until I heard one say to the other, "Stop disrespecting my city! Pick-up your bottle and throw it in the trash!" He was berating the other man for littering! MMT

Today in downtown San Diego, I watched a blue collar Mexican man get harassed for being Mexican. It was a blatant act of discrimination. And the man actually began crying. As he left the office building, he took off his jacket. His t-shirt underneath read, "I love the USA!" MMT

Today, I met a cute white guy at a local bar. In conversation he mentioned that he supports same sex marriages. I politely asked him if he was gay. He chuckled and said, "My mom supported the Civil Rights Movement. Do I look black to you?" MMT

Today, in the grocery store parking lot, I watched a man run as fast as he could with a packed shopping cart and then jump on the back for a ride. He smiled and chuckled aloud as he rode the cart all the way to his car. He was in his mid-40's and wearing a formal suit and tie. MMT

Today, I told my mother that I hated her for burdening me with all her marriage problems over the last several years. She cried and then told me she will have to burden me again because she was just diagnosed with colon cancer this morning. I’ve been crying ever since. MMT

Today, as soon as my 5-year-old baby brother came into my room, I yelled at him to get out without even looking up at him. When he didn't listen and I turned around to yell again, I noticed he had a bowl of cherries (my favorite) in his hands. He said, "Sorry, I just wanted to share these with you." MMT

Today, I asked my 6 year old son what he wants to be when he grows up. He said, "Mommy, all I want to be is happy." MMT

Today, I saw something I've seen a hundred times before from a slightly different angle. And now I realize that everything I thought I saw before was just an illusion. MMT

Today, I married the man of my dreams. I left for college at 18 and looked for him there. Nothing. I moved to a new city and looked for him there. Nothing. Then last fall I returned home for Thanksgiving. My brother's best friend, whom I grew up with, joined us for dinner. And I found him. MMT

Today, I missed my son’s soccer game AGAIN because my boss needed me to stay late AGAIN. Feeling upset, I told my husband I can't believe I keep choosing a job I don't love over my life. He replied, "At this point, I can't believe you actually think there's a difference between your job and your life." MMT

Today, my cousin died. He has been a Marine for 6 years. He fought for our country overseas on 3 separate tours in Iraq. He came home on leave 2 weeks ago and was killed by a drunk driver. MMT

Today, my teenage daughter cussed me out and stormed out of the house. It seems like just yesterday she was clinging to my leg, singing cute songs that consisted only of the words, "I love you, mommy!" repeated over and over again. MMT

Today, like every day for the last 4 years, my father picked a fresh flower from his garden and took it to my mother. This time I decided to go with him to see her. And as he placed the flower on her grave, he said, “I just wish I had picked her a fresh flower every day when she was alive.” MMT

Today, my car broke down and I didn’t have any cash on me for a cab. As I fumbled with my cell, trying to call a friend, a man walked up and handed me $20. He said, “Here’s some money for a cab.” I thanked him and asked for his address so I could pay him back. He said, “Just pay it forward.” MMT

Today, after being insulted by a guy I work with, I walked out of the office with a heavy heart only to find a note card on my car’s windshield. It was from my ex-boyfriend of 2 years who is simply my best friend now. It said, "Would it be okay if I sorta had a little crush on you forever?" MMT

Today, when he got home from work, he told me he got an A on his final exam in Accounting, found a $50 bill in the back of a taxi cab, and that his new boss treated him out to an expensive lunch. Then he said, “But your smile just made my day.” MMT

Today, I was in line at the store behind a man holding a dozen roses. When he got up to the cashier's counter, he realized that the cashier looked sad. The man smiled and said, "I'm buying 11 of these roses for my wife." And then he handed the cashier the 12th rose. She smiled from ear to ear. MMT

Today, I was traveling in Kenya and I met a refugee from Zimbabwe. He said he hadn't eaten anything in over 3 days and looked extremely skinny and unhealthy. Then my friend offered him the rest of the sandwich he was eating. The first thing the man said was, "We can share it." MMT

Today, I kissed my dad on the forehead as he passed away in a small hospital bed. About 5 seconds after he passed, I realized it was the first time I had given him a kiss since I was a little boy. MMT

Today I was approached by a homeless man who asked if I had any change. I only had two dimes, but I gave it to him anyway. As I watched him walk away, he put the dimes in an expired parking meter of a strangers car. MMT

Today, while running intervals in cross country practice, everyone was complaining about being exhausted. In the background, I heard one of my teammates declare just how beautiful a day it was. Everyone stopped and looked around. It was a beautiful day. MMT

Today, my best friend confided in me that he's having trouble playing a depressed character because he has no emotional tie to the role. He's overweight, not very good looking, 17 and never been kissed, and a total theater and science nerd. But he loves who he is, and he's happy. MMT

Today, I found myself unexpectedly crying while describing my Mom's homemade bread to a friend. I didn't realize how much I miss her until that moment. MMT

Today, I was driving to a job interview when I saw a businesswoman standing next to her BMW on the side of the road. She had a flat tire. I pulled over and helped her put on the spare. When I arrived to the interview, the woman who I helped ended up being the CEO of the company. I got the job. MMT

Today, I moved into my new dorm. My mom is 6,000 miles away. And although I thought it would feel like the greatest freedom ever, I have never felt this alone in my entire life. MMT

Today, my grandfather told me, "Stop worrying so much. Worry is using your imagination to create things you don't want." MMT

Today an old woman at the gas station came up to me and said, "I'm so embarrassed, but could you help me?" I thought she was going to ask for money, but she told me that last week her husband died and she had never pumped gas before. She had no idea what to do. MMT

Today, I found out my father spent 2 years in juvenile hall for attempted murder when he was a young teenager. Since I was born, my father has been everything I could ask for in a father. He’s honestly the most loving, compassionate person I know. MMT

Today, I was on a public transit bus when a Catholic nun boarded the bus and sat right next to a Muslim. I listened to them speak peacefully about their own God and beliefs for nearly 30 minutes until I reached my stop. MMT

Today, I visited my grandpa at his retirement home. At 87, he always seems so happy. This morning I asked him, “How come I never hear you complain about your age like everyone else here?” He replied, “I have no complaints about growing old. Many folks are not fortunate enough to have the opportunity." MMT

Today, my sister told me a student of hers turned eight years old on Friday. When I realized he was born on September 11, 2001, I said, "How horrible for his family." My sister explained that his grandfather worked at the Pentagon and skipped work that day upon learning his daughter was in labor. MMT

Today, my teacher told me to "make a good day." I replied, "Don't you mean 'have a good day?'" He smiled and said, "No, you can't have a good day, you need to make it a good day." MMT

Today, I walked into a small coffee shop in downtown Dallas around lunchtime and politely asked, "May I please have a Venti Soy Latte?" The guy behind the counter smiled and prepared my latte for me. As I pulled out my money, he said, "The latte is on me. You're the first person all day to say 'please.'" MMT

Today, my best friend confronted me with the fact that I hesitated when I had the opportunity 2 years ago, and that I have now spent the last 2 years obsessing over what could have been. MMT

Today, I got a DUI after drinking only 3 beers. I complained for hours about how unfair my life was. This evening, a close friend of mine called to tell me that his mother had been seriously injured in a car accident. She was hit by a drunk driver. MMT

Today, I was in my car approaching an intersection where a white Ford F-350 was blocking both lanes at a flashing yellow light. Just as I was about to honk and scream obscenities out the window, I realized the truck was purposely blocking traffic so an elderly man could safely cross the street. MMT

Today, I took a wrong turn on my way home. I ended up on a beautiful country road lined with wild flowers and lush foliage, so I decided to drive a little further. After a mile, I came up on a local bakery and went in for a taste. I met a great guy there. We have a dinner date tomorrow at 7PM. MMT

Today, my coworkers laughed at me when I told them my dream was to own my own bakery. When I told my father what happened, he said, “I've known a few people who went after their dreams. One thing they all had in common was they got laughed at in the process.” MMT

Today, a friend of mine was complaining about his mother embarrassing him in front of a large group of people by telling him how much she loved him. My mother died when I was 2. I would give anything to hear those words from my mother’s lips just once. MMT

Today, after feeling suicidal because I saw him with another woman, I found myself on the freeway in the dark, speeding, crying, hoping I would wreck. A minute later, a deer bolted out in front of me. I hit the breaks so hard I nearly rolled the car. And I sat there in silence, thankful to be alive. MMT

Today, I was a crying at a park over an argument I had with a friend. As I was leaving, a little girl ran up to me. Grinning widely, she said, "You looked sad so my mom said I should give you these." Then she pulled out hand-picked flowers from behind her back and gave me a hug. MMT

Today, I had lunch with my 6 year old son. We talked about dinosaurs, Pokemon, and school. It’s the first time we’ve done this since I quit drinking and started therapy. And it was the most beautiful, simple, therapeutic conversation I’ve ever had. MMT

Today, after persuading me to study Economics as an undergraduate, and then encouraging me to get my MBA, my father bought me a top of the line Nikon camera as a birthday gift and said, “If photography is really your passion, you should pursue it. I’m sorry if I got in the way.” MMT

Yesterday, I discharged a woman in her 70's who just came out of surgery. She told me she wasn't afraid of death anymore. I asked why not. She asked me if I remembered the moment of my birth. When I replied "no," she said "It's the same way with death, I won't remember it." MMT

Today, I was talking to my 10 year old next door neighbor. Then I asked her about something she told me yesterday. She looked shocked, smiled, and asked, "You were listening?" I remembered then that her parents are divorced, and her mother never seems to be around. MMT

Today I met a 90 year old woman at Kinko's who was getting her passport photo taken so she could go on a Safari in Africa next month for her 91st birthday. MMT

Today, a blind stranger told me he could hear the song in my smile. MMT

Today my father told me, "Stop looking for somewhere peaceful. Find it in yourself and carry it wherever you go." MMT

Today, I went to the wake of a teacher of mine who just passed away. When I introduced myself to her son, he smiled and said, "It's nice to finally meet you. My mom actually mentioned your name quite often. You challenged her, and she liked that." I had no idea she cared. MMT

Today, I dropped 20 dollars at six flags without realizing it and a kind man tapped me on the shoulder and told me I had dropped it. Two days ago I left my iPod on the bus and the next day the bus driver gave it back to me and said, “I recognized this as yours.” Honest people make me smile and MMT.

Today I took a bus to visit a friend in another city, and was seated beside a mentally challenged woman. I pulled out my netbook so I could do some programming. The sheer joy that lit up on her face when I took the time to explain what I was doing was unparalleled to anything I have ever seen. MMT

Today, I ran into a girl who told me that when she was younger I changed her life by being there for her in a delicate time of need. Truthfully, I don’t really remember doing much more than listening to her and letting her cry on my shoulder. MMT

Today, I was all dressed up and waiting on my blind date to arrive. He never showed up. It made me feel ugly. I thought he may have seen me from a distance and bailed. Then as I left the restaurant alone, I heard a little girl ask her mom if I was a princess. It made me smile and it MMT.

Today, my grandpa died. As I was crying and telling my grandma how sorry I was, she said, “Let’s stop being so sad and instead celebrate the 80 wonderful years he was alive... 60 of which he spent with me.” MMT

Today, I received a package in the mail containing a lost journal I'd misplaced last week. There was no return address, only a post-it note stuck on the front cover saying, "I hope to be as strong as you someday." MMT

Today, my 6-year-old son and I were walking down the sidewalk of a busy city street when it began pouring rain. I didn't have an umbrella so I used my purse to try to shelter my son’s head from the rain. A minute later at a crosswalk, a young man tossed his umbrella out his car window to me, smiled, and drove off. MMT

Today I realized that my best friend, who lost her mom last year to cancer, has a happier, more optimistic and thankful attitude about life than I do. MMT

Today, I was at the beach and a young boy on the boardwalk above started squawking at me like a bird. I caught myself getting annoyed, so I joined in and gave him a friendly squawk back. He found this quite entertaining, so we both continued to be silly. I think it made his day... it certainly made mine. MMT

Today, an elderly woman came through my register and literally spent 5 minutes showing me pictures of her grandkids. It was adorable. Then a teenage kid came up after her and said, "It must seriously suck to work here." Little did he know, that woman's joy made my night. MMT

Today, like every Sunday morning, my husband brought a bouquet of flowers to his mother. She has Alzheimer’s and doesn’t even realize he does this each week. But he does it anyway. MMT

Today was my 72nd birthday. My wife of 46 years, Sara, kissed me and said, “If I could do it all over, I wouldn’t change a thing.” MMT

Today, I was given a compliment by a respected musician for having "a beautiful voice." For years I have loved music but always felt that I didn't have the voice to pursue it seriously. MMT

Today, I accidently left my wallet on the bar at a busy restaurant in New York City. When I went back to get it 30 minutes later, it was untouched in the same place I left it. MMT
