About Member

I'm currently abroad following a dream I had since I was a child. But, it turns out I am more like Santiago than I cared to admit. What do your stones say today? Namaste, my lovely soul friend. Thank you for visiting. I can be reached on twitter at BHBT. I'm a luddite when I am not at home. No smartphone for me in Japan! Everyday is an adventure!

Today, my English teacher returned to school after suffering from a miscarriage last week. When she was gone, our class of about 40 students raised nearly 400 dollars in one day to buy flowers and gifts for her, to make her feel better. And when we gave the gifts to her, her smile MMT.

Today, one of my students who has been cutting himself for at least the last year as he dealt with depression from his parent’s divorce, left an envelope with several razorblades on my desk as he walked out of my class. There was also a note in the envelope that read, “Thank you Mr. K. Our afternoon chats over the last few months helped me realize I don’t need these anymore.” MMT

Today, I finally managed to get out of a physically and emotionally abusive 3-year relationship. I felt so accomplished that, as I was packing some of my things in my car, I started grinning and crying proudly with tears of joy in my eyes. An elderly woman stopped me and said, "Congratulations honey. I don’t know what you’re celebrating, but your smile is beautiful. You look like you just won a long race." MMT

Today, I found out that my friend’s father volunteers at the local soup kitchen three times a week. What's amazing about this is that his family has been struggling with money and has eaten at shelters several times themselves in the past. When I asked why he does it, he said, “All people deserve something to eat, and I know there are others who have far less than us right now." MMT

Today, I was stuck on the side of the road 75 miles from my home with my flashers on, with no phone. At least 200 cars had passed without stopping. Finally a beat up grey Chevy truck stopped behind me; the driver was an off-duty mechanic. He spent almost a full hour working on my car, even using some spare parts he had in the bed of his truck, fixed my vehicle, and simply drove off without expecting any compensation. Heroes like him MMT.

Today, at the convenience store where I work, I served a middle-aged man with Down’s Syndrome. It turned out that he had miscounted his change and didn't have enough to buy the magazine and candy bar he wanted, but before I could say anything to him, the teenager behind him pulled out a $5 bill and said "Don't worry, I got it." Today, as I got off my plane for my layover in Atlanta, I realized that everyone in the airport was standing still, clapping and cheering for someone I couldn't see. When I got closer I saw a unit of soldiers walking off the plane. Half couldn't even look at the cheering crowd because of the tears in their eyes. MMT

Today, I kissed my high school sweetheart and the love of my life, 25 years later, and I still got butterflies. MMT

Today was the one year anniversary of my best friend’s death. She died of cancer last year. I’ve been feeling really depressed lately, because I miss her so bad. Before she died she gave me a stuffed animal that had been her favorite since her childhood. Five minutes ago I found a note sticking out of one of the torn seams of this stuffed animal. For some reason I never noticed it before. It reads, "Live your life. I'll be watching over you." MMT

Today, a teacher of 34 years from my high school was laid to rest. She had no kids of her own and instead adopted each student. As I stood in line at the wake, waiting for my turn to pay my respects, the people surrounding me in line were exchanging stories of how she changed their lives by believing in them (I was one of them). Her dedication to all of her students MMT.

Today, my grandma choked up as she said, "House plants grow better when the house is filled with love, and ever since your grandpa died, I've never seen the house plants grow as well as they have since you moved in last month." MMT
