Today, after he told me, “Love is never planned. It doesn't need a reason. But when love is true it becomes your plan and your reason for living,” he looked me straight in the eyes, smiled and said, “Thank you for being my reason.” MMT

Today, we visited my grandma who has an irregular case of Alzheimer's. When she said she wasn’t married, my grandpa looked up in despair. We could all tell it killed him inside. But instead of getting angry, he stood up, walked over to her and asked her to marry him again. After a few moments of jogging her memory, she said, “Yes!” MMT

Today, I’ve been substitute teaching in the autistic department at a local elementary school for almost 4 straight weeks. On my first day there I noticed that two kids, who are both extremely shy and anti-social, liked playing the latest Pokemon White on their Nintendo DS before and after class and during their lunch break. They did this independently and on opposite sides of the classroom. On the second day I was there I moved to two kids next to each other and, being a bit of a gamer myself, struck up a conversation with them about the games. Since then the two kids have been inseparable – talking and smiling more, interacting more in regular class discussions, and evening hanging out together on the weekends. Even though it was such a simple thing, I’ve received a visit from both of their moms, thanking me for uniting the two of them. And today, the principal caught up with me after class and told me he wants to hire me full time starting next Monday. MMT

Today, my five year old son watched me put makeup on my face and then asked me why I was putting it on. I told him it made me feel pretty. He smiled and said, “But mama, I think you look prettier without it.” MMT

Today, the main girl who bullied me in high school came into my office apologizing and pleading for a job. I'm still thinking about it. MMT

Today, when I told him to stay out of my business, he said “No!” I said, “Who do you think you are?” He said, “I’m your friend. I’m the one who gets upset when I hear you got drunk again. I’m the one who cries with you when you tell me about the nights when you cut yourself. I’m the one who smiles when he sees you smile. I’m someone who cares.” MMT

Today, my dad – the most frugal person I know – tipped the bag boy at the grocery store $10. When I asked him how that gesture fits in with this frugal way of living, he said, “Frugality isn’t just about spending less money, it’s about spending money on the right things. Did you see that kid’s smile? That was $10 well spent.” MMT

Today, a little girl came up to my register at the super market where I work and asked to buy a lottery ticket. I told her she wasn’t old enough. She said, “Please! I need money!” I smiled and asked, “What for?” And she said, “My dad has cancer and doesn’t have enough money to get medicine.” MMT

Today, I pretend to be happy simply so people won't ask me, "What's wrong?" MMT

Today I learned that an old friend who struggled for years with depression and substance abuse killed himself. I had gotten frustrated at his dark, cynical talk of self harm and unwillingness to seek help and stopped corresponding with him. I wish I had been more patient. MMT
