Today, I asked my 6 year old son what he wants to be when he grows up. He said, "Mommy, all I want to be is happy." MMT

Today, a month after I started my chemotherapy I still have all my hair, but I've dropped 15+ pounds in weight. And several random acquaintances who don't know my situation have complimented me in the last week. They've all said something like, "You lost a few pounds. Good for you!" MMT

Today, when one of the popular kids called one of my best students a loser, she turned around, looked at the bully square in the face and said, “Why? Because I'd rather read a book on weekends than go to parties and puke with you. Because I'd rather have one meaningful conversation a day than send hundreds of meaningless texts to 40 people I barely know. Or because I'd rather wait until I'm 30 than give it up to someone around here who’s silly enough to think an arrogant ass like you is cool.” MMT

Today, I was looking through the Facebook remembrance groups of two people that died from my high school. The girl was sweet, smart, quiet and unpopular. She was killed by a drunk driver. The guy was inconsiderate, rude and popular. He was the drunk driver. His group has 602 members. Hers has 48. MMT

Today, I was in line at the store behind a man holding a dozen roses. When he got up to the cashier's counter, he realized that the cashier looked sad. The man smiled and said, "I'm buying 11 of these roses for my wife." And then he handed the cashier the 12th rose. She smiled from ear to ear. MMT

Today, I was sitting on my front porch watching the neighbor's kid have the time of his life with nothing more than a wooden stick and his imagination. MMT

Today, a year after we graduated, the kid I bullied in high school committed suicide. MMT

Today, while I was driving my grandfather to his doctor's appointment, I complained about hitting 2 red lights in a row. My grandfather chuckled and said, "You always complain about the red lights, but you never celebrate the green ones." MMT

Today, I was walking along the boardwalk in Pacific Beach when I saw 4 teenagers heckling a homeless beach bum. He laughed and said, "I'm not crazy! 'Crazy' is spending 40 years of your life hating 40 hours a week." MMT

Today, a girl who I see everyday at work, who's always the most chipper person in the office, committed suicide. MMT

Today in downtown San Diego, I watched a blue collar Mexican man get harassed for being Mexican. It was a blatant act of discrimination. And the man actually began crying. As he left the office building, he took off his jacket. His t-shirt underneath read, "I love the USA!" MMT

Today, a complete stranger on a busy city street tapped me on the shoulder and asked, "What if you were never born? Would the world be any different?" MMT

Today, I realized the unconditional love I have for my 4-year-old son when I didn’t strangle him after I spent 15 minutes drenching myself outside in the freezing cold sleet and snow looking for his favorite action figure that he thought he left in the backyard, but instead turned out to be lost in the back pocket of his pants. MMT

Today, I watched in horror through the kitchen window as my 2-year-old slipped and fell head first into the pool. But before I could get to her, our Labrador Retriever, Rex, jumped in after her, grabbed her by her shirt collar and pulled her to the shallow steps where she could stand. MMT

Today, one of the biggest bullies in my school – a girl who has mercilessly bullied me for the last 2 years – hung herself. Her final Facebook wall post reads, “I was always the weak one. I’m sorry.” MMT

Today, I created something just to create something. Just to feel alive and smile afterward at the creative mess I made. And you know what? It worked. I smiled. And I intend to smile like this again tomorrow too. MMT

Today while I was driving in my car, another driver two cars in front of me tossed litter out the window. Suddenly, a motorcycle in front of me pulled over near the litter as I passed. When we stopped at the next red light, the motorcycle pulled up to the car that littered and handed the driver his trash back. MMT

Today, after feeling suicidal because I saw him with another woman, I found myself on the freeway in the dark, speeding, crying, hoping I would wreck. A minute later, a deer bolted out in front of me. I hit the breaks so hard I nearly rolled the car. And I sat there in silence, thankful to be alive. MMT

Today, as I drove home from her apartment for the last time, I skipped through 64 songs in a row on my iPod before I found a song that didn't remind me of her. MMT

“Today is your funeral,” my mother said to me over the phone as she cried hysterically from joy. I’ve been MIA overseas for the last few months after a mission I can’t speak about backfired. I was rescued this morning – the day of my funeral. MMT

Today, I ran into my favorite teacher from high school. He was my music teacher all four years. I saw him standing in line outside an unemployment office. I own my a small production company here in L.A. that does animated graphics, sound effects and background music for TV shows, commercials, and small-mid budget movies. I grabbed him out of the line, we chatted and I hired him on the spot. He's going to be a priceless addition to the team. MMT

Today, a 16 year old girl I know hanged herself. She did so after telling her mom that she had gotten drunk at a party last night and was raped by a stranger. She left a note that said, “I wish you believed me.” MMT

Today, when I told my sister that he asked me out online, she thought it was lame. But I thought it worked out pretty well because that little victory dance I did in my bedroom would have been embarrassing if he had been there to see it. MMT

Today, when I looked around a busy restaurant at people eating their lunch, the only people I saw smiling were children. MMT

Today, I noticed that the beach bum who usually hangs outside our hotel playing guitar and singing for tips was playing out at our pool area with a mic and amplifier. I asked the general manager what was going on and he said, "That guy is talented. I hired him to play at the pool in the afternoon 5 days a week. So far I have received several compliments from guests, and it's just his second day on the job. MMT

Today, my teacher told me to "make a good day." I replied, "Don't you mean 'have a good day?'" He smiled and said, "No, you can't have a good day, you need to make it a good day." MMT

Today, after one of my 11th grade students told me she hated high school, I asked her, “Why?” She said, “In this school, the popular kids are the rudest, the nicest kids are the loneliest, and the girls everyone thinks are pretty spend more time putting on makeup every morning than they do studying. And although I force myself to smile when I’m here, I sometimes cry in the mornings because I dread coming here.” MMT

Today, I learned that a smile can hide so much... that when you look at someone you never know what their story is or what’s really going on in their life. I learned this after one of my top students – always straight A’s, a positive attitude and a smile on her face – committed suicide. Why? Nobody seems to know. MMT

Today, I was baby-sitting my four younger siblings at the park when my youngest sister, who is four-years-old, suddenly ran out into the street right in front of a lifted pick-up truck. The driver slammed on his brakes, but it was too late, he had driven over the top of her. Amazingly, my sister panicked and fell flat on her stomach when she saw the truck coming, and she passed directly between the wheels, unharmed. MMT

Today, I’m one of the loners at school. I get picked on from time to time, but more often than not my peers simply ignore my existence. I’ve struggled with my identity, and lately I’ve been trying to be a little more socially acceptable. I’ve started dressing a little different and tried to hang out with different people, etc. It’s been stressing me out. But today someone wrote this on an index card and slipped it into my locker: “Show your true self. Don't give in. Be who you want to be. Not who you think they want to see. You are perfect just the way you are.” MMT

Today, I came across a Facebook page with 89 fans that’s dedicated to making fun of a kid at my school. It made me sick to my stomach. So I wrote this on the page’s wall: “Read your cruel words, and then get up and look in the mirror, all of you! And say, ‘I like torturing others! I am proud of myself!’” I just checked the Facebook page again, about 7 hours later. No one responded to my post. But the page now has 26 fans. MMT

Today, the homeless man with tattoos who I consciously avoid every day on my walk home from work saved me when a mugger grabbed me from behind and pulled me into an alleyway a few blocks from my apartment building. The homeless man came out of nowhere and sprayed pepper spray in the mugger’s eyes. MMT

Today, my grandfather told me, "Stop worrying so much. Worry is using your imagination to create things you don't want." MMT

Today, as I was walking home from my ex-boyfriend’s house, crying, with a box of my belongings after he unexpectedly broke up with me, I didn’t notice the little boy following me until he yanked on my jeans. I stopped, turned around and looked straight down at him. He looked straight back up at me. There was total silence between us for what felt like an eternity. Then suddenly, he looked down, grabbed a wild dandelion growing between the cracks of the sidewalk, looked back up at me with the biggest, brightest blue eyes and handed me the flower. I smiled, and then so did he. MMT

Today, my son showed up to the diner for our weekly lunch date a few minutes late without a baseball cap on. “I can’t even remember the last time you showed up without a cap,” I said. “Actually, it’s kind of a funny story,” he said. “I’ve never told you about him, but every week on my walk here a homeless man who hangs out in the park down the street compliments my hat. So today, I stopped and talked to him for a few minutes. I found out that his name is Kyle, and I decided to give Kyle my hat. He was so happy. And next week when I walk by we’ll have matching hats.” MMT

Today, after several kids teased a less fortunate girl (who lives in a poorer neighborhood) this morning for always wearing the same clothes, seven students in my class went home at lunch time, emptied their drawers and closets and brought this girl 16 pristine and beautiful outfits to wear. I found out about this after I asked her why she changed her clothes after lunch today. MMT

Today, the drunk driver who killed my husband 12 years ago is out of jail on parole and I ran into her this evening at a local sports bar. MMT

Today, I stayed up all night reading MMT stories just to evade the heartache of waking up without her. MMT

Today, as I looked at my ex-girlfriend of almost 2 years from across the hall, I realized that it’s weird how we go from being strangers, to being friends, to being more than friends, to being practically strangers all over again. MMT

Today, a bullet shot from an insurgent standing roughly 50 meters to my right clipped the edge of my sunglasses, knocking them off of my face without even gazing my skin. I leave Afghanistan tomorrow morning as planned, for good. MMT

Today, I received a call from my city's battered Women's shelter. I'm a college student and was assigned to volunteer for the organization. I assumed they were calling about me helping them with their new campaign. Turns out, they were calling because they were informed that I'm in an abusive relationship. It only happened once. MMT

Today, my sister and I were in a bad car accident. Luckily both of us were wearing our seatbelts and didn’t have any life threatening injuries. My sister is Mrs. Popular at school – she knows everyone. I’m a bit of an introvert – I hang-out with the same 2 girls all the time. My sister immediately posted a comment on Facebook about our accident. And while all her friends were commenting, my 2 friends showed up independently at the scene of the accident before the paramedics arrived. MMT

Today, there was a massive power outage in all of San Diego County and the surrounding areas that left 1.5 million people without power for over 12 hours. As I was driving home this evening I saw 2 separate locally owned grocery stores in a poor side of town with lines out front. The grocery store owners were using the unfortunate circumstances to feed the homeless before their perishable food spoiled. MMT

Today, I found out that a close friend of the family’s baby passed away. The doctors said it was SIDS. As my 2 year old was throwing a fit this afternoon, as is common during the "terrible two's,” I had never been more thankful and happy to listen to him scream. MMT

Today, I was sitting on the steps of church waiting for a bus when I saw an old Catholic nun being assisted up the steps by a young man wearing a Muslim turban. Once they were at the top, the nun turned to the young man and said, “I can see both of our gods raise beautiful children. Thank you.” The young man smiled and nodded. MMT

Today, my college roommate died from a brain aneurysm while he was sitting in his computer chair. After I returned from the hospital, I walked across the dorm room and noticed that his web browser was open to the makesmethink.com ‘Submit your story’ form. He never finished writing his story. MMT

Today, sometime before sunrise someone used chalk to write a message in huge letters on the inner side of the white cement wall that wraps around the perimeter of the depression rehab clinic where I work. The message says, “To everyone who has held the pieces of their lives together when they were broken, smiled when they felt like crying, and stayed strong in moments of weakness: You are my heros! Thank you.” MMT

Today, I told my mother that I hated her for burdening me with all her marriage problems over the last several years. She cried and then told me she will have to burden me again because she was just diagnosed with colon cancer this morning. I’ve been crying ever since. MMT

Today, I met Casey for the first time. But I feel like I've known her my entire life. We kept finishing each others' thoughts before we could speak them aloud. I was at a loss for words, literally. MMT

Today, after being insulted by a guy I work with, I walked out of the office with a heavy heart only to find a note card on my car’s windshield. It was from my ex-boyfriend of 2 years who is simply my best friend now. It said, "Would it be okay if I sorta had a little crush on you forever?" MMT

Today, I miss him more than words can explain. But whenever these feelings creep up inside me I am reminded of the reasons why we don't speak anymore. Letting this pain go is so hard. I wish we could erase that night from history so we could be friends again. MMT

Today, my 22-year-old son has been with his girlfriend for a year now. He called me today to tell me he’s in love and that the two of them would be stopping by for dinner. When I got home I expected them to be sitting on the couch. Instead I found them in the backyard on the old trampoline laughing hysterically in the pouring rain. I'm divorced and had given up on love, but today their relationship MMT.

Today, as you were breaking up with me, all I could think about were those weekday mornings when you compared the Pop-Tarts and gave me the one with more frosting. MMT

Today, after deciding to wear my comfy flannel shirt out to a bar while all my girlfriends got dressed up, I met a boy who told me "anything worn in confidence is beautiful." MMT

Today, I got back to my dorm room and took off my jacket. On the inside of the hood someone had scribbled "bitch." I've been bullied my whole life, and this hurts just as much at 19 as it did at 9. I don't know why some people have to be so mean. MMT

Today, my parachute and my reserve did not deploy. Luckily I was sky diving with a friend who hadn’t yet deployed his parachute. He noticed me panicking, dropped over, strapped me to his harness and deployed his parachute. We landed safely together. MMT

Today, as I was panicking and fighting an Asthma attack because of the large grease fire I caused in the dorm room kitchen area, my roommate woke up from a dead sleep, calmly walked into the kitchen half asleep, extinguished the fire with a fire extinguisher and went back to bed without saying a word. MMT

Today, even though I was an emotional wreck as we parted ways at the airport terminal, it really touched my heart to see a few other people crying with us as they watched us say goodbye to each other before he left to fight in a war neither of us believe in. MMT

Today I took my daughter to the park and a woman warned me that there was a "bum" sleeping on a picnic table by the swings. I stayed away. Shortly after, 2 teenage boys came by and the woman offered the same warning. One of the boys said, "Oh, that's Elmer. I know him. He's homeless. He's my friend." MMT

Today, a girl in my class came to school with the entire back of her head shaved, the front remaining intact. I pulled her aside and asked her why she did it. She told me she just wanted her father to notice her, to see her, just once. But her father just walked by her on his way out the door without saying a word. MMT

Today, while I was stuck in a traffic jam caused by a drawbridge opening for a large sailboat to pass, two thirty-something women jumped out of the car in front of me, cranked up their car stereo, and danced in the street until the drawbridge came back down. MMT

Today, my boss sat me down in his office to talk to me about my performance at work. He gave me some of the most sincere compliments I have ever received. It made me realize that all of the years I spent in high school being made fun of and not being one of the popular kids really didn't matter. MMT

Today, as he stormed out of the house, my 14-year-old son glared at me and screamed, “Well congratulations! Because of you, I will never be stupid enough to take even one sip… EVER!” MMT

Today, I was all dressed up and waiting on my blind date to arrive. He never showed up. It made me feel ugly. I thought he may have seen me from a distance and bailed. Then as I left the restaurant alone, I heard a little girl ask her mom if I was a princess. It made me smile and it MMT.

Today, at 4PM I pulled over to help a man (who turned out to be a paramedic) push his car out of the road. After looking under the hood for a few minutes we both agreed his radiator needed to be replaced. He told me he was running late to work, so I used my AAA card to get him a free tow and ride to a repair shop next to the hospital. Exactly an hour later I called 911 when my son’s best friend fainted and stopped breathing after an asthma attack. The same paramedic, Jake, showed up at my house, performed CPR on my son’s friend until he was breathing again, and took him to the hospital. MMT

Today, I walked my daughter down the aisle. Ten years ago I pulled a 14 year old boy out of his mom's fire-engulfed SUV after a serious accident. Doctors initially said he would never walk again. My daughter came with me several times to visit him at the hospital. Then she started going on her own. Today, seeing him defy the odds and smile widely, standing on his own two feet at the altar as he placed a ring on my daughter’s finger MMT.

Today, I realized it wasn't the sex that proved to me she was special. It was the first time she slept with me without having sex that I knew she would be the one. MMT

Today, I casually asked one of my best students – always polite and super smart – why she loves reading novels. It came up in conversation because it has always impressed me that she is reading a new novel before class every couple of days. But her response floored me. “Honestly, I read because, for just a little while, I'm living someone else's life and not mine. Which helps me cope with reality by dulling it a bit,” she said. I was caught off-guard. I didn’t know how to respond. She always seems so confident and content. MMT

Today, I was on a public transit bus when a Catholic nun boarded the bus and sat right next to a Muslim. I listened to them speak peacefully about their own God and beliefs for nearly 30 minutes until I reached my stop. MMT

Today, after I secured the scene of the murder, I went back to my police car and cried until the homicide detectives arrived. MMT

Today, I was cleaning the kitchen with my husband in our brand new house. We were joking around and having a great time. It suddenly dawned on me that if two years ago someone had told me my life would end up like this, dealing with those bullies in high school would have been a lot easier. MMT

Today, my friend and I discovered that one parking ticket dispenser on campus gives $1 tickets for a nickel. We put $5 in nickels into the machine and spent 2 hours passing out tickets for free. Some people were so jaded that they believed our tickets were fake and refused our offer. MMT

Today, I cried when I saw the cuts on my daughters arms. But couldn't tell her not to hurt herself that way, because I do it too. MMT

Today, I felt hopeless and alone as I was driving home after a brutal breakup with my boyfriend. I turned on the radio and the MJ song "You Are Not Alone" was playing. At the exact moment the chorus came on, I passed a huge billboard sign that said in big black letters, "YOU ARE NOT ALONE!" MMT

Today, I moved into my new dorm. My mom is 6,000 miles away. And although I thought it would feel like the greatest freedom ever, I have never felt this alone in my entire life. MMT

Today, I spoke my mind for the first time and my opinion changed the outcome of a big decision at work. MMT

Today, I was standing on the side of the street when a group of military personnel marched by as part of an exercise drill. To show my appreciation, I started to clap for them. I was in a large group of people waiting for a bus, and no one else clapped. MMT

Today, after doubting my own abilities for nearly a decade, I called in sick to my job and flew to another city to show my drawings to one of my idols in the comic book industry. He really liked my work and wants to see more. He's flying me back for a second review next week. MMT
