Marines never address other Marines as soldiers.
He/She didn't say what branch of the military to which they were attached.
Korea currently has 2 Air Force, 12 Army and 1 Navy bases (provided by a quick Google search). Marines probably provide support at all bases, thus if the Marine was stationed on one of the many Army bases, he/she could easily cross paths with a Major... and the Army often refers to themselves and others as 'soldiers'.
Personal note: I'm glad there can be times of relaxation and playfulness in the heavy job we ask you (our young men and women) to shoulder. Keep reminding your superiors of the need for such allowances and reminders that we are all human. Though I may not agree with policies which place you there... I support you. Thank you for your service.
