Make sure you teach him about privilege as well. Clueless, ignorant people aren't much better.

Careful - some racists can still think their friends are an exception to their stereotyping (which is why some of them go "I'm not a racist, I have black friends!"). I heard of a way to talk about it that seems good - teach that race / skin color only indicates where a person's ancestors came from, and that racism is thinking that it means anything more than that about that person.
