Today, I was standing on the side of the street when a group of military personnel marched by as part of an exercise drill. To show my appreciation, I started to clap for them. I was in a large group of people waiting for a bus, and no one else clapped. MMT

As a future soldier, this makes me sad...

This makes me sad too. Nobody ever realizes the tremendous sacrifices our soldiers make until someone they know personally going off to the Middle East. Thank you for showing our soldiers the appreciation they deserve. :]

I feel like it's a tragedy, that so many innocent people die to support US imperialistic policies. US soldiers that are barely out of their teens die, millions of innocent civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan die. If you want to see something that'd really make you think, research on why the US has been starting a new war after every two years on average, for the past half century. Eisenhower talked about how the military industrial complex would benefit from engineered wars; innocent people die, but who cares as long as there's money to be made, propaganda to be generated to create consent among the masses, etc. I watched The Obama Deception on google video, that really *made me think*.

I clapped to show my appreciation for the soldiers, not for what the government intends to do with them. Many soldiers Don't want to be them, they have to be to go to college, or to have a way out of their current situation. It is a very brave thing to sacrifice ones life for anything, even if it is for a cause you don't believe in. Bravery is staring something in the face you disagree with and showing it that you care enough about the people you love to press forward.

As the wife of a hardworking and dedicated solider, thank you.

I would have clapped with you.

I agree with Qasim, though I sympathize for the poor disproportionately targeted as human shields for our country as well as the gay and lesbian soldiers defending a country that won't even give them equal rights. The 60% reported rate of sexual trauma among female service members and the 90% who leave directly because of it are one of many reasons (like torture) that I don't blindly excuse the troops from accountability. Soldiers have options: http://www.wearenotyoursoldiers.org/

Violence (and torture!) never solves anything.

I would have started clapping with you too. They deserve it.
