Today my best friend’s mother, who’s been a pro life activist for as long as I can remember, had an abortion. She’s 52 years old and her doctors told her the pregnancy may cost her her life. MMT

Married couples, older women, mothers by choice, anyone may have an abortion. Part of the problem is how the procedure has been publically regarded as "birth control" for drunk, promiscuous girls. Pro-lifers notoriously underestimate the amount of medically necessary abortions (as well as rape pregnancy abortions) in the United States to advance their cause. We still have one of the highest rates of motherhood and infant mortality in the industrialized world. It's crazy that pregnant women are pressured to value the insentient cluster of cells in their wombs more than their own lives. Well, before I get off the soapbox, my idea of pro-choice is that I wouldn't make any of your medical decisions for you or expect the government to make my own.

Please don't turn this into an Abortion debate thread.

Firstly, we support the choice. We don't necessarily support abortion. And also, I can personally attest to the fact that there are people who would rather have been aborted than born.

I hope she's doing ok. I had a pro-life friend who went through the same thing, and she was grieving terribly for a long time after. She had so much self-induced guilt about it. There are tons of ways to get therapy. You should encourage your friend to look into it.

Truth is the world doesn't need any more babies. Overpopulation is a real threat which we forget when Christian families like the Duggars pop out 18. We need to abolish abstinence only education and tell kids that waiting isn't about marriage and purity but maturity and how to protect themselves, not how often condoms fail and lying that birth control causes breast cancer. When we do that we won't need abortion like secular countries like western Europe. Doesn't that sound better?

Wow kateums, you're obviously clueless to any sort of biology education. There are clear set reasons as to why all of those things come about... Please don't talk unless you have a good understanding of what you are discussing. But seriously, no abortion debate thread please. We should take this time to ponder the hypocritical nature of humans and their survivalist instincts :-)

to be honest i'm not really sure what to think about this. she could have wanted the abortion to save her own life, or saved her own life because if she did really die from having the baby, questions would rise about who would take care of the newborn.

Despite how insensitive this might be i have to say the irony is stifling.

Horsefeathers: studys show that the slowest population growth is in MEDCs (more economically developed countries, e.g. UK, USA, France, Canada, Germany etc), and in some places the population is decreasing. The fastest population growth is in LEDCs (less economically developed countries e.g. Africa, Indonesia etc.), where there is no birth control or education. While I agree with your point that the best way is to educate about birth control etc., countries where you and I live are probably in no immediate danger, and we are better educating those much worse off than ourselves.

SLOWEST population growth but not ZERO population growth. Look at all the impoverished families in the US. Tell me we're not still having more kids than society can afford?

hyleanlegend: I find it extremely disturbing that you would post this: "And also, I can personally attest to the fact that there are people who would rather have been aborted than born." First of all, that is one of the saddest things I have ever heard, and I can personally attest to the fact that I have never heard of a person who would admit they would rather have been aborted. Sure, people hate their lives, people even commit suicide, but it is because there is SOMETHING WRONG WITH THEM/IN THEIR LIVES, and they need HELP! It is when those people don't get therapy that they continue hating their lives. I personally know several people who have gone through therapy and are now the happiest people I know. Even of the suicidal people, I doubt many would say they wish they had been aborted. It is sad, and I feel bad for you and your perspective on life.

@ horsefeathers 1 in 6 children in the United States is born into poverty. Really sad.

....because we're not in immediate danger, we should work to sustain a slower population growth? How ignorant.

*shouldn't

Don't turn this into a debate, just read it and stfu.

Why are comments enabled on this site if not for discussion? Do you live in a vacuum, carmen622?

i registered for this one, its interesting =) there is enough food in the world to feed everyone, but its sold to who has the money, not who needs it. overpopulation- world wide yes, not in some countries. japans birthrate is declineging. the abortion this pro life woman had, it seems quite hypocritical to me. abandoning her values, but then we dont have all the information.

But did she abandon her values? Mjayet? Or did she open her eyes to reality?

People who are pro life don't believe in killing an innocent life, however the woman who spent her life telling people that it is wrong to have an abortion because it is doing just that, decieded that her own life was more important than the life of her unborn child. I don't know any of the circumstances, and I'm not going to pretend to. I think that is why this was posted, because someone who had spent a very long time telling people how wrong it was to have an abortion didn't consider why one would trully be needed until it as her life that hung in the balance.

People who are pro life don't believe in terminating a fetus. They don't care what happens next. They believe in killing a mother's life if she finds herself in OP's tragic situation but women aren't innocent because Eve ate the fruit first. Some BS like that.

So in her mind, it's wrong to have an abortion at all. But only until she needs to have one, then it's okay. That's very hypocritical to me. A true, pro-life supporter who gets pregnant at 52 should stick with their values and carry the baby. Even if it risks her life. She is essentially saying her life is worth more than the child's. I am pro-choice, by the way. It sounds like the reason she was ever pro-life was to have something to hang over people's heads, to make herself feel like a better person. But maybe that's my inner shrink coming out.

mgn813: Yeah, because it is for sure very awesome to carry out a child which then might grow up without his mom because he/she killed her. Also I think doctors are obligated to save the mother first.
