He won't understand unless you are direct in communication and make him understand. Maybe the question is why do you want to get rid of somebody that matters that much to you?
At #1: She still wants to be his friend.
I read about melodramatic teenage relationships here far too often, but the poster makes a valid point.
As Dr. Seuss once said, "Those who mind, don't matter. And those who matter don't mind." I'm sure that if you believe in the reasons of why you're doing what you need to do in time (maybe not immediately) they'll understand.
if you don't have those feelings for him, it's better to end it now before things get worse. I had to break up with a good friend of mine too not that long ago. He may not be okay with it right away, but eventually it will get better. Just keep telling yourself that.
Any time someone openly mourns a friendship that will never become more, everyone comments, Hang in there! It'll change or so and so doesn't deserve you! You might be surprised :) and all that nonsense. Here you are, having taken that chance and realized friendship is often enough itself. I'm sorry that doesn't make these people think. I'm beginning to think they don't like to. You're right to worry, he probably won't accept this graciously, but you'll do more harm the long you let this go on. Accept the consequence of doing the right thing and hope he finds his way back.
