Today, she makes as much money on California’s unemployment benefits as I do working ten hour days as a janitor for a Fortune 500 company based out of Arizona. MMT

I earned more on the dole that I do now working my arse off & paying tax. I can no longer afford to save money should I lose my job.

Some of my coworkers and I were having a conversation the other day about that same notion. While jobs are hard to find, when those unemployed are making more than we do doing NOTHING, where is the pressure to find a job that will pay them less? In the same respect, I have friends who could NOT get unemployment benefits because they had no way to PROVE they had no source of income.

This doesn't MMT sympathetically at all; that's the whole point of unemployment insurance, isn't it? And if you're working for such peanuts, maybe it's time to consider trying to find (or make) work that pays better. And hey, if you take a risk and end up fired or bust, you have some insurance backing you up. (Self-employment going bust thanks to the recession qualifies for unemployment insurance, at least here in NY.) Funny how that works out so well; it's almost as if that's how they planned it.... Though, I do wish lawmakers would ensure that minimum wage pays better than unemployment benefits, so there's none of this backwardness while the market is sorting itself out.
