Today, after 7 years of living on my own, things have gotten rough. I lost my job and I can't afford my bills, or even buy food. So I called my parents for the first time to ask for some financial help, and that I would pay them back ASAP. My dad told me that not eating for a month 'would do me some good.' MMT

I hope your dad's comment made you think... about the fact that the economy sucks, everyone is losing their retirement, and someday he may be retired and need financial help, so he should get off his high horse.

I have the same relationship with my parents. It's incredibly difficult. Good luck, stay strong. Eventually you'll find the support (even if it's not financial) you need in the friends around you.

Wow, your dad is horrible. But as the above poster said, eventually he's going to need help from you and then you'll be able to return the favor (or be the bigger person and help him anyway.)

Well....you can't really tell from a 3 line story, but maybe its because the relationship with your parents wasn't that good? Maybe thats why you lived alone? But, if thats not the case, then that really sucks, and I agree with the above commenters.

That is ridiculous. Whether your relationship with them was good or bad, they should be able to realize when to support their own child. I wish you tons of luck.

It's your fault you have no savings and need Mommy and Daddy to bail you out. I see this happening in my age group right now and it sucks. But a lot of them spent their money and aren't willing to sell luxuries like video game equipment to pay rent.

that is so harsh and unfair. i feel for you. check out your local foodbank organizations. many times they ensured that, although i was very poor, i did not starve. good luck

@Antilegomena - How much can you get for selling a used video game system? a few hundred dollars maybe? if i sold my xbox and computer and all my video games, i wouldn't make a full month's rent. and since you "see this happening in your age group" right now, you should understand that it may not be the person's fault but the economy. This person recently lost their job. How do YOU know that they didn't have savings and had to spend their savings to pay their bills and buy food for months? Eventually even the biggest savings account will run out with no income to replace it. If this person was spending all their income on video game equipment and never saved a single penny, sure, i agree, they are at fault for irresponsible decisions. but you don't know that and your assumptions are harsh and judgemental.
