As great as it would be if you could tell them the truth, you have to remember that their close-mindedness is not your fault. It's homophobes, not homosexuals, who are not worthy of respect
If they are not homophobic or closed-minded, you can save yourself from self guilt and shame by coming out to them. I know it's hard, but everything will turn out okay. There are people out there who love you for who you are and who accept you; I'm one of them. Stay strong
You shouldn't be losing respect for yourself, you should have no respect for your homophobic parents.
My guess is if they were not homophobic and close-minded, he wouldn't have said it. Which really sucks, because parents are supposed to love their children no matter what. Not to mention the fact that being gay is completely fine, but....
