It's not fair and neither he nor you deserved this. But, I've decided I will be happy with the cards I'm dealt if I can live to the age of 50. Too many of us are robbed of the chance to get married, start a family, and see our kids grow up. Please, be thankful your father was able to experience those amazing things. And may he rest in peace.
But he died with a family who is so, so proud of him. Living a life like that of your father is meaningful. Being a good person (as he clearly was) and raising good people is the greatest thing any of us can do. It's horrible that he died, and you're right, cancer doesn't discriminate. But that good life he led means something. And you honour him by living well too.
I lost my mother young too (she was 43 and had Motor Neurone Disease {I think in the US it is known as ALS or Lou Gherig's disease} but I'm so proud of who she was and all she accomplished).
