I've read or heard this somewhere before, but I can't remember where.
Have you ever had a toddler run out into the street or a parking lot? Or get lost in a store?
Try holding YOUR arm in the air for even 15 min. I congratulate all I see doing the leash.

wow no offense to the women but it MMT that they are only caring about stuff that makes them look cooler (like how celebs carry doggies) and not the important stuff
Ralph, in theory the leashes are good, and keep kids out of trouble. In practice, however I've never seen a responsible parent use one. About two months ago I watched two women walk through the mall, one with a child on his leash. He was walking calmly about two paces ahead of her. All of a sudden she yanked back on his leash and he fell to the ground. When he started crying and said he hurt his leg she turned to her friend and said "I love this thing!" while laughing. It got me really angry. On multiple other occasions I've watched mothers tie their little kid's leash to something so that they would be safe to be left alone, outside for unbelievably long stretches of time. (once a 3 year old, left for an hour. After about 15 minutes I went over and started talking to her.)
On a slightly different note, doesn't taking the god for a walk usually imply that IT gets to be the one that walks?
My mom used the leash when we went to the city or museum together, and I turned out alright. My aunt uses it with her autistic son, who was nearly killed when he ran into the street, and it has saved his life at least twice. I've seen harried mothers lives made a little bit easier with leashes in airports. Give a leash to a responsible parent, and it will just be an extension of a parent's love and desire for their child's wellbeing. Give it to a trashy person who abuses it's power, and you've got people like Boatkicker mentioned.
I personally think that leashes are good, and that they get a bad rep because of the connotations with leashes and animals.
I dunno. I've never seen any kid with a leash, except for my (now) 6 year old boy, who loved to pretend that he was the dog. Any chance it could just be in fun?
I remember back when I was a kid, mom used to, quite rarely, use a leash that tied on my left wrist, made of very elastic material, quite comftable, and pretty (sky blue with cute train patterns all over it). As a matter of fact, I loved to wear it!! Mom and I would shake it and play with it while we were walking. I actually asked to wear the leash several times cause it was kinda fun.
It's like any instrument in this world. It can be used for good or bad. You can use a knife to make a delicious meal, or to hurt someone. The tool is just that, a tool, and what really matters is how one uses it.
My mother had the wrist-to-wrist one for my youngest brother. She had a whole bunch of kids to watch, and I never thought it was a bad way to keep an eye on him in public. The 'harness' ones kind of bother me a bit, but as its been said, I don't judge.
